Jokey title apart this is actually a serious matter.

My girlfriends' brothers wife and her mother were out in their Volvo Estate when - Bang! A Fiesta slammed into the near side rear doing considerable damage requiring extensive body and suspension repairs.

Here are the good bits... the delightful female in question has no insurance, no tax, mot, license & didn't own the car! Oh, yes, she also gave a false name & address at the scene too (as they found out later).

The following day their insurers informed them that the other person's details were bogus. So off to the Police Station they went. After informing the police of this the Police said they had a man in the cells at that very moment for driving the same Fiesta in a dangerous manner earlier on the moring of the accident (this lovely chap appears to be a refugee too, and the woman in question is his girlfriend - nice...). He also had no insurance, licence etc.

Upshot is court appearances and charges for all the above offences for both guilty parties. Plus appearances to give evidence etc. Thankfully no one was hurt (other than shock). No imagination needed for other more tragic events that could have ensued due to these people.

Now to the point of my posting this thread. What is the likely outcome for those involved in this mess? (both in terms of sentencing and claiming etc.)

Without wanting to beat the 'Anti speeding tactics' drum (it already sounds like an old Tarzan movie on here in that regard) or divert my new thread away from the question I posed above, I have to ask if Police resources (see bleow) are not being mis-directed.

I drove along the A1(M) southbound passed the Durham City junction a week or so ago only to see two 'Talivans', two tripods complete with cameras, a police volvo and bike and several officers all standing on the flyover scanning the southbound traffic.

This was a clear straight stretch of Motorway on a sunny cloudless Saturday. All the while people like the above are driving dangerously around our roads uninsured et al. The cynical amongst you out there might say that catching these people actually costs the 'system' money, whereas standing on a flyover like David Bailey making drivers nervous raises money. I just don't want to be the one to say it! Oops too late.

Let's hope it is not too long before resources like those detailed above are re-directed to the real road dangers out there.

I will relay any useful insights and information on to my girlfriends brother.

Thank you.

Likely outcome?

Well, if they cant pay, then they probably wont have to....

Which sort of takes the piss a bit really.

Matt.

Interesting one. They will be asked to make good the damaged caused. However I suspect that they won't have any money to do so. All the court can then do is to get them to pay what they can, ie £1.00 a month for the rest of their natural lives - of absolutely no use to you what so ever, and they'll probably default on that too. Having said that the police may prosecute for driving without insurance (if nothing else). May be they could do 6 months community service on motor mechanics then quite literally make good the damage

Any car that they're found driving should be immediately (and I mean on the spot) impounded.

If it's not theirs and they're driving it without the owner's permission they could add theft to the list of offences.

If it is theirs, or they have the owner's persmission, the car should be auctioned or scrapped, as appropriate.

Surely they'd soon run out of cars to drive? The main problem with this plan is that if they were done for theft, they'd undoubtedly get nothing more than a slap on the wrist!

i had an incident happen to me in oct 2000, stationary at some lights, 2 cars back. then bang a white van rear ends me. there were some police about 150-200 m behind in a bus lane (giving some one a ticket - i though) so i assumed they saw it all, pulled over to get details and the van then drives off (had a trailer as well so couldn't see car reg). so i look back and police do nothing so went after said van, on fon to 911 to inform them of situation, trying to get van reg. anyway within 2 mins, 3 police cars fly past me and stop van. 2 guys jump out and do a runner. anyway end of story was guys court arrested and went to court, they pleaded guilty to everything (had no insurance and were banned before incident) and i my insurance claim through some fund and i never lost any ncb

I,m hearing stories like this more and more often. The authorities are doing something about it somwhere in the midlands. They are giving asylum seekers free driving lessons and tests because they cant stop them driving illigally.
MAKES SENSE TO ME !

Cant remember the name now, but there is a central fund for Insurance companies that they all put into to cover for uninsured drivers. This will pay out in this case and you shouldnt loose your no claims bonus - though you will loose the excess.

Not a lot that Plod, Insurance and individuals can do. Chances they wont get a prison sentence and a fine wont do anything as they cant pay.... makes a mockery of the whole thing (as someone has already said!)....

Cheers,

Paul

Send the big boys in. Warning: once you have employed them there's no going back. Everyody can find the money if they are sufficently motivated.
