By the time the tunnel is completed the government will have seen fit to ban all cars.

Could be fun on your push bike...

Multi-Billion pound!!! I dont think I can ever see that coming about.

Look at the financial problems the Channel Tunnel has caused and that has massive passenger take-up by comparison with what they could expect on the remote tip of Scotland.

sounds good, not too far from me! bet there would be problems with people running out of fuel and blocking the tunnel, as they wouldnt put a petrol station down in a tunnel would they? ah they dont have enough money to be fair.

The largest tunnel of any kind in the UK is the 31-mile-long Channel crossing connecting Folkestone, Kent, with Calais in France. Opened in 1994, it is serviced by car-transporting trains rather than a road.

I always thought the channel tunnel should have been a road tunnel.

Agreed - It would have been quicker to cross, employed far less people (so less running costs) etc...
In fact, it would have been as simple to get into France as it is for the rest of the europeans to cross each others borders.

I have no idea why we ended up with the time wasting, administration heavy, situation we have today. I can only think that the ferry companys wouldn't have liked it.

I think the ferries only survive BECAUSE of the pain that is the current channel tunnel crossing experience.

Yeah cos you couldn't drive quicker from Calais to Dieppe in the 4 hours it takes to get there from the Newhaven...duh

Not to mention the hour spent in pre-arrivals at Newhaven waiting to board and then the 1/2 disembarking at Dieppe...duh

Probably from the economic model they used, a rail tunnel was more profitable, plus it gives them a chance to fleece us in the Eurotunnel shops which are twice the price of the Cite d'Europe next door and five times the price of the local Auchan!!!

ok, slight exaggeration but you get the point

It goes without saying that the profit motive was ALL that was considered when they decided to go ahead with it - as always.

See ya Sunday BTW

Pah - still waiting for them to build the A303 tunnel past Stonehenge and that's been proposed for ages.

It'd be cheaper to move the Isle of Stornaway closer to the mainland.

Although as long as the Scottish Parliament uses Scottish tax money I don't care (it'll be their own voters that turn against them), so it might be another nail in the coffin of this pile of useless winkers we call the British Labour Government.

You need to have been on PH for a (short) while I believe. Then ask the question again.

But I'm not entirely sure.
