I've been the re-carpeting route with my first Chimaera and know what it entails to do the job particularly those pesky bolts that hold on the rear roof section.

Which is why I'm wondering if it's at all possible to re-colour carpet without removing it?
My carpets aren't at all bad, just a bit faded on the turret tops around the seatbelt fixing points and the parcel shelf. I'd rather not go through all 'that' again if I can help it.

Ideas?

Hi,

I am also thinking the same thing. I found the following websites that do auto carpet dye, but just don't know how effective it would be and how hard it would be to apply. As a matter of interest does anyone know how much it roughly costs to have the carpets replaced professionally? thanks.

I use shoe dye. You can get it in any cobblers it comes in a spray can, mask everything, spray carpets leave for 20 mins then buff off excess. It's not brilliant but restores the colour for a season or two.

I did this but I'm not sure I'd do it again. I got a few spots on the leather which were impossible to get off. And I couldn't put anything like a coat or jacket on the back shelf because the dye was still coming off over a year later.

My sister did her Chimaera carpets with suede dye, and fixed it with a hairdryer. That was several years ago; it still looks good and I'm sure I'd have heard if she'd got any dye on her clothes.

I was quoted £350 last year which was a bargain when you think that Coverdale rip you off for that for a set you have to fit! BTW How come a Chimaera set from them is £300+ but an MGB or 911 are £100 -£150 ;(
Not had it done yet as still toying with changing the whole interior colours. The company involved are used to TVR's as the indi I bought mine from uses them.
Mail me if you are interested & I'll try to dig out the info.

VHT`s excellent spray dye from USAutomotive: colour fast, hard wearing and their medium blue was as close a match to the dark blue carpets in my Griff as I`d hope to find. As with any spray, it will get everywhere you don`t want it so mask VERY well and don`t breathe the fumes! wobble

That's a damn good price, been quoted £1100 for re-carpeting my Chim in 100% wool Wilton. Must be 'darn sarf' prices

Pity Dudley Port is too far - and too damn close to the Mother-in-Law

Forget about dying them - its easier to change them and is not as difficult or as costly as some would have you believe...

I'm just doing my Griff I found these guys on Fleabay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Car-Carpet-for-
they used to supply the factory with carpet, nice stuff and not wool which stinks if it gets wet, they also do all the TVR colours. I got 8 sq metres "to be on the safe side" ..... it took every scrap! having all the piping done at Preston Car trim, total cost, carpet and piping about £180

So you used the old pieces as templates?

I assume you then sent the pieces away for piping. How long did you have to wait?

I have another idea (alcantara) but think I'll put that into another thread to avoid confusion.

Yes I dropped all the bits of carpet off, he did them in just short of two weeks and for £50 top job as well.

to do a DIY job is not as bad it sounds It can be done provided you take your time. You'll also have a much better range of carpet to choose from too...
