I'm going through a bit of an upgrade program at the mo.

Here's where we are at, to the 500 I'm having ACT non-reversal manifolds, enlarged plenum, full V8D Kent Stealth cam kit with solid lifters, billet vernier, double valve springs with ACT induction kit with K&N (ACT kit already in place) and some 45mm trumpets (although a bit confused on the best option for plenum induction)

But who to fit the cam?

At the moment it's out of Rob at V8D, Ian at Torque RVT and Richard at Dulford has also expressed an interest.

Who would you go for? Any of the above or someone different?

Ta,

Corin

I would recomend Rob,he's the only one who has worked on my car and not ripped me off, or returned my car with something else broken on it,he even rebuilt my engine FOC after a well known ecu "expert"caused my engine to overfuel and bore wash . TVR ownership seems to be a mine field with people only too willing to shaft you.

My Tamora is having an engine upgrade at Dulford Automotive at the moment. I had a chat with Richard during the Piston Heads meet in January near Taunton. He suggested that fitting Nitron shocks to my Tam would be a great improvement. I also mentioned that I was considering getting the engine upgraded to 4.0L. Richard said he could do this, so I decided to go ahead and get the 4.0L Red Rose upgrade, Nitron Shocks, and Carbon Fibre airtight air box done.

What impresses me about Richard and Dulford Automotive is the wealth of knowledge and experience he and his mechanics have about TVRs, Richard being a Tiv owner himself. I'm sure when I get the car back next week, the work will have been done to a good standard and well worth the money spent.

Also getting the chassis waxoyled and new battery fitted.

Dulford have always done me proud on my S and were responsible for a lot of the development work on my Griff 500. Can't fault them for knowledge, service, ability or honesty. They even phone to say if we do it your way it'll cost X but we can save you money and it'll be as good by doing this instead.

But I guess it comes down to personal preferences in the end when you talk to them. thumbup

Second that but also think that checking the bottom end would be the first move! No point adding all these bits on just to have the engine pop!

Can't agree more. All the people at Dulford are fantastic. Its the honesty that I like the best apart from the fact that they do a very good job. I even travel from Essex to them to get my car serviced!

With your wealth of experience John how do you suggest checking the bottom end and why is this a common problem?

Not so much a "common Problem" Corin, just prudent.
If your cam is worn (hence replacing it) it would be a good idea to make sure the rest of the engine is healthy to, before sticking performance mods onto the car which will very quickly find the parts that are worn and usually in an expensive way .
Remember these engines are already highly tuned Rover units (originally a 3ltr Buick design) and you are about to up the anti.

Dulford again Corin, why travel?

my engines just been rebuilt by them...FANTASTIC!

(tried several cams - all fitted by Rich - all fine)

Rob is the "Guru" ofcourse but he's miles away and fitting a cam ain't rocket science, it choosing "The One" thats hard!

andy
monster

edited to say that they can check the engine out prior to work commencing anyway. Compression/bleed down checks, drop the sump etc.

I hear what you are saying Andy, if Rob was only an hour away it would be a no-brainer but about a four hour drive each way plus B&B etc it has a logistical impact.

Richard and Colin replaced the cam on mine last year. They did an excellent job - so good in fact I'm thinking of having it done again! Only because the MC2 cam I chose is a bit too lumpy for me. I have no hesitation in recommending them.

Good luck with your cam and other mods. Are you re-mapping or replacing the ecu?

Garry, the original plan was to get the car to a spec I was happy to let Mark Adams loose with a new chip but now I think I am looking at a full Emerald or Omex set-up eventaully.

Drop the sump and get Dulford to check the big ends! A compression test would be useful. Just something I learnt from 6 years and 140,000 miles!
