I've got my engine ready for its new cam now and after removing the heads today, I was suprised to see cross hatch honing marks on the bores. Can this be right on a 39k engine? Now, "rebuilt" springs to mind, but look at the second picture of the heads and I'm buggered if that's been cleaned up and redone. Opinions / possibilities please?? Or am I just making a fuss about nuthin'?

Absolutely normal. I've rebuilt RV8's with the cross honing still visible at 80-90k. Thats one of the bits that doesn't wear excessively!

Nick,
You nearly bought my old 500 - good to see you're really getting your hands dirty!

Hi Nigel!

Well unfortunately the one I did eventually get, although a good one, hadn't just had a new cam as per yours! I've had a ticking noise for a wee while which I could track down to No.1 cylinder and went looking. Eventually, I found that I had 5mm less lift on those 2 lobes than the other 7 cyls!

Has your new Cerbie been behaving?

Nick,
The Cerb's awesome and running like a dream (that'll jinx it).
Wouldn't go back but kinda miss the Chim (especially in this top-off weather).
Cheers

I assume the crosshatching is also on the thrust faces of the bores? Where the pistons rub.

Not quite sure what you mean there, Boosted.

As I hope the picture shows, the X-hatching is all the way down the swept area. Is this what you mean by thrust faces?

The thrust faces are in shadow in your pic. They are at 90 degress to the crankshaft centreline. Looking at your pics then I'd imagine everything to be good but thought I'd mention it anyway.

Now I get you! Makes perfect sense thinking about it....

The honing marks appear all the way round the bore so the answer is yes!

The honing marks are all still visible on my 104k mile engine. You've got nothing to worry about.
