Does 2 Drivers into 3 Cars go with Insurers?
Discussion
Got the Cerbera Insured through Sunninghills, The Missus has got a Ford Focus Insured through the AA.
We are both 2nd named drivers on each others Insurance.
I am thinking about buying an Audi A4 Quatro 2.8 as OUR 2nd car, (ie She can have it when I'm out in the Tiv).
I've spoken to Sunninghill, and they tell me that I would have to start off a new policy for the Audi with no no-claims bonus - £1500 per year premium.
Spoke to Direct Line for a comparative quote - They suggested transferring the wifes 5 years no claims to me and having the Focus as a 2nd car insurance which would bring the Audi down to £955 and push the Focus up from £350 to £430
This seems a bit bizarre to me - has anyone any experience of multiple insurance cover?

I currently insure 3 cars (had 4 once) for the wife and I using AON Private Clients. They seem to take the view that with only two drivers and three cars, the risk is spread more. Each car has it’s own NCB and, when I first did this, the third car started off with full bonus as an introductory offer.
Their service is excellent too.
If that’s what you’re looking for, try calling Haley Wilson on 01483 706076.

Basically each car must have its own insurance policy (or be included on an insurance policy).
In the scenario you give (2 cars, 2 drivers, 2 policies, get a 3rd car and drive it) then the 3rd car is uninsured. Big no-no!
You can temporarily insure the 3rd car as a temporary additional vehicle on one of your existing policies (usually for up to 3 months) which gives you a breathing space to find a better policy.
There are multiple car policies out there (and I'd be interested in knowing more about them if anyone has any details) but they are few and far between.

Incidentally, when I bought the Chimaera I insured through Cheam who mirrored the full NCB I had on the Corrado, so I basically started a new policy with full (but unprotected) NCB. After a year I was able to protect it and Sunninghill had a better package so I went with them. I believe that Sunninghill also do mirrored NCBs as well, by the way.
You might find that if you insure your 3rd car with the Cerbera's policy and then go back to Sunninghill or Cheam they may well do a mirrored NCB on a new policy for the Cerbera. You'd have to do it this way round as they are only really competative for TVRs, BTW.
[Edited to remove a paragraph on Classic Car policies as your proposed Audi would be far too young to qualify.]

I am pretty sure that the NCB belongs to the person. And as for expiration of NCB - when I was looking, it was generally 2 years from the last date of insurance.

My car - SAAB (class 1 insurance business use) full NCB with Norwich Union with partner as named driver.
Partners car - Clio (SDP) full NCB with Norwich Union with me as named driver, separate policies.
Insured Griffith with Mannings with partner as named driver. They gave me full introductory NCB and unlimited mileage for £700ish. Hopefully I can protect this next year.
Policies seem to be per car, therefore 2 policies, 2 NCB's.

Could you register the third car in a childs/relations name (or even a fictitious name at your address, but might be a bit illegal) then drive it using your insurance under the driving other peoples car clause with third party cover only.
Would be handy if the third car was a cheapy runaround you wern't bothered about having stolen/bumped.

Hmm interesting - I've been here in the States for coming up for 4 years, does that mean that when I reurn to Blighty I will have lost my NCB?
If (as I suspect) this is the case - why would living in the US for 4 years make me a greater risk?

Had this situation this year - took on a 3rd policy.
Admiral gave me 50% on my second car (me only driver)based on me putting the wife's car with them (her name - me named driver & max ncd)
They weren't competitive on the Chim - so put that with Tesco.
I seem to remember ncd is lost after 4 or 5 yrs - but if you can show you were driving either out of UK or under Co policy - might allow an exception. Recommend if going down - to alternate over years to keep valid just i case.
Hope this helps

The 3rd car itself would still be uninsured and hence illegal to drive on the road. The car AND the driver must be insured. Often this is on the same policy but if you are driving someone else's car on your own policy then you are insured on your own policy and the car is insured on the owners policy.

If the car is not named on an insurance policy (either its own or as an additional vehicle on another car's policy) then it is not insured.
Cue prosecution for "driving whilst uninsured".

I have just returned to UK after 3 years in OZ and they counted the OZ no claims but they are RHD in OZ.
If you get proof of no claims from US insurer you may get some credit, but my broker would not take my US driving into account because of LHD.

Sounds like I'm proper f##ked then as not only have I been living in the land of left-hand-drive-lard-o-matics for nearly 4 years, but I only insured a car for one of them. Looks like I'll be swanning around in a 10 year old micra for a while to keep insurance costs down when I return next year!
