calibrating an oil gauge
Discussion
Has anyone done it?
My oil pressure gauge reads 8psi when it should be 23. I am using a new pressure switch. Will increasing the resistance with resistors or replacing the existing wire to the gauge with a larger cable work? I am not sure if it is a raise in resistance that equals a raise in pressure or the other way round.

Given that disconnecting the wire makes the gauge read zero, then inserting a resistor in series would make the gauge read lower. In theory, putting a resistor in parallel with the sender unit would make it read higher but it would also mean that the gauge would never read zero and I would doubt that you could achieve a linear, accurate reading on the gauge this way.
I suspect you need at very least a voltage dividing circuit or, most likely, some form of wheatstone bridge circuit to accurately calibrate the gauge. Back to schoolboy physics for that one!
If your gauge is so far out then it may be a faulty sender unit or gauge.
