I can't get the laptop connected to the ECU, it comes up a fault "serail not connected" I have had it connected before so don't know whats gone wrong, it may be due to updates and cleaning out stuff on the laptop, anyway I have tried loading software back in and no joy, also tried com 1 and 2 and all different baud rates, it did work on com 2 and 4800 before (I think) any help appreciated.

Have yoy tried plugging into the port and then rebooting the lap top. Sometimes externals are only detected at boot up.

What software are you trying to connect with?

Do you have anything else running that might be trying to use serial ports? Usual suspects are Active Sync for Windows mobile phones and PDAS or Nokia PC Suite for their phones. Quite often these sit there trying all ports all the time.

Try using HyperTerminal to open the serial ports and see what errors it gives you. Don't have it plugged into the car when you try this though. The ECU should ignore anything it cant understand but you never know!

The the imobiliser is of with the MIL light on and buzzing, I have also had it conented with the engine running but still no joy, can't understand it, two of us have had it connected to my laptop and it worked, a mate his bringing a serial to USB adaptor round tonight which we have had working, and also he s bringing his car too, so we will try to connect it up to that.

I have also uninstalled all phone programs just incase.

How much hammer has the connecting cable had? Are you able to open the connector ends to see if maybe a wire has come loose?

Kev,

We have major problems with usb to serial adapters at work, are you trying to go from a serial port on the laptop via a usb cable to the ECU, or from a USB port on the laptop to a serial cable to the ECU?

The best USB to serial adapters I've found are the CBS2650's from Startech.com

Firstly, Roy S2 I have done a continuos check on the cable and it is ok, and it is fairly new.

Convert I have not tried a USB conection yet, I have tried the serial from the laptop to the three pin on the ECU, it did work before on two different cars, my mate is coming down in a hour or too with a USB to Serial which he has had working so will try that too, and on his car as well, so that will be on two cars and too laptops, I will post on here when we have tried it, also we are going to try it on a Vista laptop to see if that works, don't think it will but will let people know if it does for future reference.

Kevin have you ever used it on this car??? TVR have been known not to connect it, I also understand sometimes one on the Passenger side aswell as drivers, so check if you have two, the other might work. I assume you've got multiple yellow Cerbie s/w rather than single Blue Cerbie, depends on the level of the MBE ECU s/w.

Right here we go.

My mate came around and we connected my laptop to his car, we have done this before and it did work but does'nt now, we then connected his laptop up to his car and it worked, his laptop is the latest sort with Vista on it and all worked well and via a serial to USB adaptor, we then connected his laptop to my car and all work well, the readings looked ok so we reset the faults and peace at last, that dam buzzer stopped, engine runs ok, so all can assume is that numerous faluts logged up in time and it said enough is enough, (time will tell) then we connected my laptop to my car and it still will not work, so it must be something that has happened to my laptop in the last year that is the reason why i can't connect to the ECU, i will buy a serial to USB adaptor and try that when i can, i would need one for a new computer anyway so may as well try it.
