Apparently not. Maybe this is well known but I'd assumed that if I left the car parked with the roof off (Griff panel in the boot) but with the alarm on then it would be covered for theft.

I've now spoken to 2 brokers and one says its ok for a few minutes (??) and the other says not covered at all yikes

Anyone heard different ? Is there a company that insures cars when the suns out ?

I was looking through various policies on the net the other day and was suprised that this was the case.

It seems crazy that a piece of easily cuttable(?) canvas makes the car insured but it certainly seems that it is a get out clause. I have left mine with the roof off all over the place and for hours on end - but not now. If it is a convertible, there must be some occasions where you can legitimately leave your roof off.

How would you stand if the roof is off when the car is in your garage I wonder. I guess the garage bit would make it 'covered', so to speak.

I feel a call to my insurance company coming on. I know that many years back when I started out on the convertible route with an MX5 it was insured with the roof off providing the doors were locked.

Go figure

I leave the Tiv all over the place with the roof down - mainly because the roof panel is still in the garage at home !

Just checked with mine - Frizzells/Liverpool Victoria - and they say I am covered, as a soft top is hardly a security item.

There are definitely those eout there that exclude it so it could be worth people checking - it may be the reason for some of the cheaper quotes.

Is this one for the PH management to look in to or is it old news?

So at least some are ok with it - I'll get a quote from them to compare. David - is this for a Griff ?

It's a Chimaera Tig but my wife is ex Civil Service (CSMA) so gets a good discount. I don't know how competetive they would be otherwise.

My renewal is in November and I will be doing some comparisons then as it will be 10 years + by then so I may be able to get a classic policy as it is my second car and 4k per year.

When I renewed in April, Mannings TVRCC rate undercut Frizzells/LV CSMA rate by about £80. Having paid my premium I subsequently found that Mannings will charge for any changes to your policy, whereas Frizzells/LV do that free of charge. I opted for Mannings because of their track day cover, though I may never need it.

I find that with 3 cars, renewing is a nightmare as 2 of them are chipped, one is a TVR and 2 are for business use. The BMW and Chim are on a 2 car policy and all have 2 drivers.

It seems very difficult to easily compare cover (European can be included or not) and even for my wife's Mini I got fed up with trawling the internet and went back to Frizzells/LV.

My current policy is a classic (in more ways than one). It doesnt cover roof-off for more than N minutes. N is undefined until you claim - which I'm not exactly comfortable with.

I think a convertible car should always be covered either roof on or off. Its not as though they dont know its convertible when they quote. Next time I'll check it through properly.

Exactly - Should you be expected to put the roof on when you fill up with petrol and have to wait in the shop while everyone does their weekly shopping?

My bike is insured, through Carole Nash, other than if it is at home, when it is supposed to be garaged. An earlier policy said I had to be 400 yards from home before it was covered for theft! It has got an immobiliser and touch sensitive alarm already so is pretty well protected and they set automatically after about 15 seconds.

I have to say that I am surprised this topic hasn't generated more response as it has pretty serious implications for anyone with a convertible. As you say tig, they know it is a convertible and we are no doubt paying for that privilege already.

Just phoned Admiral (I've got their multicar) and its covered with the roof off. The only thing they don't cover is personal items left unsecured, so stuff left on the seats etc. Stuff in the boot is fine.

Very impressed, the guy on the phone didn't know so he asked his supervisor, then reported back including telling me his name and his supervisors name without prompting in case of any queries!

I insure the work horse in this house hold and the Wife insures the Griff. She works in insurance so asked her to confirm.
Great news.......Direct Line have said,
"Car is covered with roof off as long as windows up and alarm on"
I can rest easy again

Thanks for raising the issue, never gave it a thought!

EDIT: They also said "any vehicle they class as a convertible is classed this way."

The discount is 7.5%.

You may already realise this, but you can join too, if your wife is a member. It's been free for the last couple of years.

I just use her membership number and we save a decent bit of money on various things throughout the year such as car hire, insurance etc.

I've just checked with Hagerty and they confirm that the car is covered with the roof off. Clearly stuff left in the open car is not always covered but that makes sense to me.

Has any Tuscan or T350t owner asked this question of their insurers yet?

Ah good. I'm with Direct Line. I never gave it a thought either. Well done to the OP for bringing it to our attention.
