There’s me going for a leisurely pint with the nice chaps and chapesses from the Surrey TVRcc tonight admiring one another’s cars, Spiders? RL7’s? Silverstones?...

Wow… look at that Tamora on the overrun… real flames and everything! Nice parallel parking…hmm, what’s that? 3 foot bl**dy flames!

Erm mate… them there is flames… er, mate there’s flames coming out the back of your car… MATE….. YOUR CAR IS ON FIRE!!!

Three fire extinguishers were rapidly produced and the flames beaten back by a very nearly scorched owner.

Smoke continued to pour from the rubber bushes holding the exhaust in place with a very concerned local saying “that’s parked outside my house that is, where’s the petrol tank”, “it’s in the back” was said in unison by the assembled crowd “er, I’m calling the fire brigade then” as he hurriedly ran back to his house only briefly looking over his shoulder to make sure his geraniums hadn’t self combusted.

A little later, after I had got myself another pint I returned with camera in hand to record the aftermath for posterity… the shots aren’t great, but the owner raised a smile with the Firemen at the end…

And Gazzab, who said Cerbs need a £6k contingency!

All's well that ends well... kind of.

That'll be 2 other blokes with fire extinguishers and one with a camera then.

Serious thanks to those equipped with something other than a Pentax. Guess the lesson is don't keep the fire extinguisher in the boot and don't initially flap at the flames with a travel rug before digging out the extinguisher......

Back of exhaust and number plate area* already removed and now I am after two exhaust hangers, well ideally just the rubber bits but happy to stump up for the whole bits.

Fair enough a Boxster probably wouldn't have done this but 4 bolts and 10 minutes has stripped off the offending parts ready to put on the new ones. Don't think you would get this ease of repair with something mainstream.

Any ideas from where I may be able to get these greatly received......

  • usual impressive technical insight

Hold on a sec... have you got the hump that I don't carry a fire extinguisher in my wallet? Whereas a camera at a TVR meet is quite normal.

You seemed like a nice chap on the night, don't ruin it now.

Didn't have the hump then and certainly don't have the retrospective hump, just didn't add in smiley face, etc, etc

Will definitely be there next month, though hopefully won't be requiring the assisitance of the AA to get it home again.........

Chill out there Don, Paul is a nice bloke as you thought. All that matters is that we got things under control quickly with hopefully no major harm done. It certainly looked cosmetic to me, I hope it all works out for you Paul.

Good, good. At least you didn't drive it home as you were initially suggesting - just like a TVR / SuperBike owner, NO FEAR! See you next month driving

I have just spoken to TVR Centre in Barnet and apparently the hangers are common with a VW Passat (1988 onwards).

Going to pick up a couple of sets today along with a new fire extinguisher and will be back on the road for the weekend, scrupulously monitoring my back end of course.......

None the wiser as to why it happened, favourite theory is that a rather large bump on the A3 shifed the rubber parts onto the hot exhaust causing them to catch fire.

Glad no one was hurt/ not too much damage was done.

Donny- Gazzab's rule is £3k, I think Jensena's rule is have £6k ready just in case... From seven years/70k miles of Cerb useage, im tempted to suggest Gazzab is closest to reality thankfully.

Good stuff. I'd have a careful look over the car and make sure there's nothing else adrift. TVR Fix are your closest specialist (Ewell) if you need help/a second opinion. I think they may even be open on Saturday morning.

Update.......

Picked up the replacement pair of hangers from TVR Centre, very helpful but a deceptively long walk from Barnet town centre. Bought 3 on the basis that it is the weekend after all (insert own rubbers joke here)

Total cost 45 quid plus a couple of hours of my time taking apart and putting together. Cause still unknown, latest suggestion it may be running rich or a sensor is out allowing the exhaust to overheat.

Fair enough TVR's can have issues but my last 3 fixes have been.....

1/ 25p for a fuse
2/ Fence tack found in layby
3/ 12 quid for pair of silencer hangers

If the AA can live with this then so can I.........

West Ham let him go at the end of last season, so he's still on the bench, except now it's inside a fire engine!

Did you ask him before posting pictures of this 'event' on the internet?
