Haven't posted for while as nothing to report whilst TVR been in sick bay...

It was a 'Taraka' but just put 3000mls on after getting it back from being completely re-built by Rob Robertson in Spalding ... A M A Z I N G - the difference you would not believe. I was also given choice of emerald mappable ECU or a completely electronic distributor-less ignition system with coil packs so there's no ECU to map! Otherwise known as 'megasquirt'EDIS.
The EDIS was supplied by Phil Ringwood in Sprowston, Norwich.
I think my car was a bit of a test bed but, between the two of them, they perservered and have produced a very quick engine. The best part (again comparing against the original) is instant pick up and pull from low revs - absolutely no hesitation, and a very 'revvy' engine. A total transformation, didn't think it was possible with a big lumpy V8.
I can't praise both of them enough for the work they have done on my car.
We are all too quick to grumble these days but I made it my task to just give a pat on the back to these guys who well deserve it and I'm happy to recommend them . Thanks,
davidindevon

I think this thread will catch the eye of a few people! Is your Meagsquirt system controlling the fuelling too? I know it can, but you only mentioned ignition. This is my planned next mod. I fitted an MBE box to my Westfield before, with coil pack, junking the dizzy. What a transformation! I can only imagine how good it is on an RV8. And God bless the idea of doing away with the Lucas black magic system and replacing it with something most tuners could map. Can you post some pics? I and many others I think, would be very glad to see how your coil packs are mounted and the trigger wheel.

I've heard of megasquirt before and normally as a good move.. Though in all honesty know little else about it.

Though from this it sounds like it might be a good thing to regain those lost horses under the bonnet.

If you can post pictures (as captiv8ted said) plus any idea on costs, times, work required etc. I would be most appreciative..

Hi Captiv8td and Wazall,
I'll take some pics to-morrow and post them to-morrow night probably about 8ish if I can although I've had some probs with posting photos on here before no matter how many times I read the instructions for doing it. If not email me as I know I can attach photos to emails - done that before - clever like that ! ! !
Regards for now, Davidindevon.

David, please, please, please come to the next evening meet up at the Lyneham on the first Monday in June! Nick (CaptiV8ed) and I are both considering such an option and would love a look at yours in the flesh!

I've just had an Omex 705 ECU, wasted spark, sequential injection system fitted to my Chim 450, with the Lucas ECU, stepper, dizzy, coil and AFM removed, and that's the single most obvious sign (other than there being a big hole where the dizzy used to be and the coil packs hanging off the engine!) - it revs and revs and revs, cleanly, from low revs until the limiter cuts in. Most impressive, although it's taken a lot of time (and money!) and still isn't properly finished.

Dang. Looks like the weekend weather's got into my brain. Corrected, thanks!

Dizzyless ignition is absolutely the way to go smile I've had this on my Griff for the past 18 months. (although for 6 months of that the car has been in pieces for chassis & body restoration...)

I assume that's a serpentine engine if you've done away with the dizzy. What're you using for the cam phase sensor?

Cam phase sensor? That's so last year wink
You can phase an engine based on ion sensing in the ignition. Of course you have to start it on semi-sequential though.

No, I haven't tried this yet but I think the theory is sound

Correct.

Hmmm. I may be lying about the sequential injection. Cam phase sensors were not discussed.

You can do sequential injection without a cam sensor but you can't do sequential ignition.

The only thing is that the injection events are not phased to valve opening times.

You can do semi-sequential, or sequential with random phasing, but I don't think either of these count as sequential injection.

I like the idea of the ion sensing ignition control and knock detection, the MS guys mention it from time to time but I'm not sure whether they're serious or just winding up DTA/OMEX etc.

LOL.

The ion sensing works, but I don't think anyone has put it all together in one system yet - something to do with having sufficient DSP capability which the current stuff doesn't have.

I tend to agree that semi-sequential and random phase are "cheating", but on my old engine I couldn't tell the difference when I swiched the camsync on anyway.

Got a friend running Megasquirt and EDIS on his grif 500. He noted that the drivability is much improved around town (no shunting etc).
I helped with getting the trigger wheel on his serp (intermediate) front cover:

Which was a pretty straightforward job, More photos if you want.

Specific details are;
MS2, with dual LC1 wide-bands on each bank and edis8 with ford coil packs.

I had one of the early installations on the RV8 with an Omex150 still using 14cux for fuel. I've got to admit it was one of the things that really improved my old V8S, it revs so freely and with a fully balanced bottom end venturing above 7k rpm was very easy to do hehe

Sorry guys I'm going to bed...
I've spent 4 hours trying to upload photos but when I do that it wipes my message. If I do it the other way round I got my message but the photos don't appear.
Why is life so complicated.
Using uncle dave he does say put [pic] before the whatever it's called and [pic] after but further on he says just highlight and copy and paste
What am I doing wrong I wonder?!
Davidindevon.
I'll try again tomorrow

Dave,

Save your pictures to a photo storage site such as www.photobucket.com Then use the following formatting:-

It's is easy as that. If you hav your own website, then of course you can insert that address instead.

Thanks Captiv8ted,
However, I can't open the link box with the X in it to follow the formatting.
I have emailed uncledave to ask what I'm doing wrong and await reply as looks the most idiot proof to me (except for me that is!) DonnyMac has seen my miserable failures and offered tinypic which I will try to use now on a duff photo as a test - don't know where it came from.. field at folk festival by the looks
FFFINGERS X'd

Well I can see a line but I've got this far before and nothing viewable appears or alternatively I've been unable to open the link.
I also think these tinypic links time expire because there have been others on pistonheads that just don't open. Any ideas on that?
You lot will be calling me hayseed if I don't manage to get a photo of something here soon.
