After my service the Griff (standard 500, stock ECU etc) is still pinking when hot although not as badly as before. Now it pinks on 50%+ throttle between 3-4k RPM when up to temperature. Spoke to the garage (very popular and reputable specialist) who advises me to retard the timing. So a couple of questions:

Q) As this is happening when hot, is it being disguised when the car is cold by the ECU over-fuelling?

Q) Will a cold air pipe and elbow from ACT help?

Q) Is there a chip with enhanced fuelling available? Not talking Mark Adams Tornado here – just a swap similar to the Cerbera smooth running chip from TVR Power (£20)

Q) What RPM can I expect mechanical advance to stop?

Thanks all,

Rob

Why not just retard the timing as they suggest.. it's probably a very small amount needed.. and more importantly - why did they not spot it on the road test soapbox

not sure as to why they did not spot it - how long are they supposed to road test them for - would have to be a good 10 - 15 mins to spot it AFIK.

I plan on retarding the timing but I want to check it first at max mechanical adavnce.

I popped by your on Saturday.....but could not remember which house it was Wyn.....so made a lot of noise outside and figured you were not in!!

I use Super or Optimax etc - also added Octane Booster, helped a little but did not cure completly.

My SX used to pink a bit but moving to 98 ron fuel stopped it. I'd try this before changing the timing as it's the easiest fix

Tried 97 / 98 with Octane booster, so no luck there.

Thanks,

Rob

Mine was pinking after being set up at Power, put the timing light on and knocked it back a couple of degree's, was fine after that and not noticeably down on power, actually it was quicker as didn't have to worry about pinking biggrin

Set it to 28 degrees (full advance) at 4K revs or wait til it pinks and knock it back a few degrees..

The test drive should be just that .. not a joy ride.
