slightly off topic this but my poor little brain was all confused and disbelieving after a conversation with a friend of mine and I thought some of you knowledgable PHs might shed some light on the subject!

MY friend has just spend a fair wedge of cash having his mitsubishi 3000gt souped up with big fancy intercoolers, new internals, bigger turbos (I think) and a bunch of other stuff. All with the aim of getting one of the fastest 3000gts in the UK. He is aiming for late 10s in a quarter mile run (10.8 / 10.9s) apparently some other owners are already doing that time and posting vids on utube to that effect.

now bearing in mind a 3000gt weighs something like 1800kgs (maybe more) do they really do 1/4 miles that fast? what on earth is the finishing speed likely to be to do it that quick?

For some bizzare reason I know a Mclaren f1 does the 1/4 mile in something like 11.5 seconds. which makes me think a 3000gt (even if it is running 500+ bhp with truck loads of torque) is not going to beat that!

I looked up a bugatti veyron and that does it in 10.8 and weighs 1600kg and as we all know that has 1000bhp!

(most modern tivs weigh about as much as a fag packet and have "insert random number here" BHP and the fastest I have seen mentioned here is the mid 12's (might be wrong on that)

this whole conversation of course made my bullshit detector go off big time!

So is he full of shit or do these cars really accelerate that quick (as quick as a veyron???) or am i jsut being a cock? smile

cheers

The 4wd helps a lot for launching, gaining a lot of time there over a rwd car
Veyron in fact weighs closer to 2000kg as far as I know
There are one or more Cerberas that have done high 11s at Santa Pod, fastest TVRs on the 1/4 smile

OK, firing up Cartest2000 sim software for an idea ...

Standard 3000GT (320bhp) is worth 14.2 secs @ 98 mph - so showing its weight there !
Upping to 400bhp (and 400lb/ft) reduces to 13.3 @ 105
Upping to 500bhp (and 500lb/ft) reduces to 12.4 @ 110
Upping to 600bhp (and 600lb/ft) reduces to 11.8 @ 118
Upping to 800bhp (and 800lb/ft) reduces to 11.5 @ 130

So expect a lot of money is being spent to get a LOT of power eek Turbo cars can have monster monster mid ranges - the performance of the 997TT is above that of what its power/weight would suggest.

(The same s/w gives a 400bhp tuscan at 12.4 @ 118mph)

Interesting piece of software you have there! the tuscan time is about right from what I have seen posted on here.

Looking at some of the cars on youtube they have been on a serious crash diet and have been completley stripped out. Looks like my buddy is perhaps being optimistic evening with 5-600bhp & lb/ft unless he looses a whole lot of extra lard from the car! I might have to offer my help with that, dismantling the interior of someones p&j ! frown

http://www.cartestsoftware.com/cartest2000/index.html (not really expensive)

Have got within 1 mph and .1 secs on other TVR's actual real life 1/4 mile times (by feeding in dyno graphs to make things more accurate).

Yes, more than half a Ton more and similar power isn't going to be quicker than a Mac F1 even with a small 4*4 advantage that probably is only in first gear anyway!

Those earlier times could be reduced by upping the coefficients of friction (ie stickier tyres), reducing the time it takes to change gear (I think it allowed 0.7 secs in total for manuals), and tinkering with weight.

Anyway, its all fun smile
