"Visual inspections revealed no damage to any of the vehicles (saloon car, ambulance, London taxi single deck bus and mini-bus). Speeds tested ranged from 10mph and 40mph. Minimal changes in suspension and tyre wear were found when vehicles tested at higher speeds. When tested at speeds below 25mph changes were within tolerance levels and any possible defects would be picked up during normal maintenance, e.g. MOT."
I wonder what would happen to a TVR hitting a speed hump at 40!
It is a real pity that this part of the petition wasn't directly answered: "have no proven impact on road casualty figures", and only addressed by saying a reduction in speed results in up to a % of causulty reducations.

Is that what they reckon?b*llocks
is what i say, my workshop as changed more coil springs in the last few years than i have done in the whole of my career(FACT)and i will argue with anyone who says different,if you ask any motor fitter working in the suburbs local to these demon humps they will tell you the same
and the constant speeders dont slow down for em anyways because they couldent give a stuff what it does to their suspension,or dont understand one or the other

The government response claims that "the emergency services had no concerns that road humps effected [sic] their performance."
Right. Interesting then to read in a blog called Random Acts Of Reality what an actual emergency medical technician has to say about speed bumps:
"Speed-bumps - Good idea in theory, but in practice they slow us down by a hell of a lot, wreck the ambulances, and in five years time I intend to go on permanent sick leave because my kidneys have been shaken out through my mouth. My plan to get local councillors thinking a little more sensibly about speed-bumps would be to strap them down on a spinal board and drive them through the streets - I think they would be begging for mercy after five minutes."
Now there's an idea!

I realised what a waste of time the government petition site was after the overwhelming public response to the one on road pricing was replied to with complete bullsh1t from the prime minister.
Personally I like speed bumps, the ones in the road near where I live are just the right distance apart to get to about 4000 rpm in second, then I get loads of pops and bangs when I lift off for the next bump. I think it's great but I do not understand how it can be called traffic "calming"
I'm also not sure about their contribution to road safety. The chavs nearly get airborne in their Saxos when they overtake me.

It is just worrying that something can be so common place that has no evidence that it actually saves lives.
Its the whole arguement about whether you'd rather drivers are paying attention to the road and what's going on around their car or their speedo and ensuring the car goes over large bumps. You're better off noticing a child running out in front of you travelling at 30mph rather than not noticing them at 20mph.

Slight deviation on the subject.
I was in Beaumaris on Anglesea yesterday and used the large car park in front of the castle.
Going in is fine but leaving is cr#p.
There is one of those short sharp rubber humps followed 2 metres later by some one way tilting steel barriers.
Very slowly over the rubber but the bl#dy steel things dragged the full length of my Tuscan underside and it did exactly the same to my mates Elise.
