Took car out for little spin last night. Whilst parking up back home I noticed the temp, normally 90decC, was almost up to 100dec so switched off & let cool. Replaying that moment in the old noggin I'm thinking the cooling fans were quiet.
Before I go & wake up the neighbours by letting it run up to temperature, is there anything obvious I can check?

cheers all
Ed

Remove & connect together the wires of the Otter switch and with the ignition on the cooling fans should run.If they do the switch would be the problem, if not could be fuses/relays.

You may have blown the fuse for the fans - Simon at Leven explained to me the other day that this fuse is shared with the horn - so you could simply try the horn, if it don't work, then the fuse is probably nacked. Then all you have to do is find the right fuse...

Right horn sounds fine. Shame!
Connections.. I pull off the two leads & join together the exposed connections at the bottom on the tank.. correct? (i.e. not do anything with the wires)
cheers

They are the correct leads but,you need to join the two together not the connection points of the otter switch.

A paper clip can be used to join the two wires..

If the fans work with the ignition on - then you know the fan is OK and most of the wiring.

So - It would probably be the otter switch.

Horn was (is) OK however the left most fuse (40 amp) fried to buggery!
Now, HOW INACCESSIBLE are the effing fuses??!! As I took it out it left a few fried bit behind.. not managed to get them out yet. 40 amp fuses from Halfords?

edited to say, never seen a few so burnt up as this. Hope not start of some horrid gremlin!

Much as I hate Fleabay you can get blade fuse removal tools which make the job much easier on the Griff.

I think the early Griffs (and Chims) had both cooling fans running off one 40A fuse and they were prone to blowing or failing. Later versions split the cooling fans to two 25A fuses. I believe that ONE of these is shared by the horn. You *could* get your fans rewired to the later spec 2*25A circuits.

What is the "correct" operation of the fans. Mine has gone up to almost 100 in traffic a couple of times and when I get going at speed again the temp doesn't seem to come back down. The fans cut in but should they remain on continuously till the temp is back down below 90?

btw .. as mentioned the leftmost fuse (40 amp) was gone, and I mean GONE. Not seen a fuse look so bad before. There's a new one there now.. but I've got a couple of spares tucked away in the car; we're off to Italy next month so hopefully this gremlin wont bite again.
