Have I got this right?

Pre-cats¹ are the bleedin' great tubes after the exhaust manifold on modern, new fangled 450s and 500s.
De-cats are as above with bits taken out.
Pre-cats² are 400 & 430 engined cars that were manufactured before catalytic converters were required by law (and sound the best).

Sounds about right to me.
The pre-cats on the larger later engines look like big dustbins.

Now then.......pre-serps and serps.....

Again earlier engine(front of engine) against later style of engine.

Nearly Cats actually have Three Cats
Two Pre-Cats one either side of the engine in the manifolds after the four pipes go into one before the lambda sensors which lead into the Main Cat which is the big bore pipe that goes down into the main exhausts.
The Two Pre-Cats are not necessay at all and so can be removed while leaving the Main Cat in so you can be partially De-Catted or fully De-Catted if you remove the Main Cat

Clear?hehe
