Anyone ever get paid out from Independent

No,
I had insured mine 4 weeks before 'd-day'... felt like such an idiot. Even asked who they were cos I'd never heard of them. So they owe me close to a grand.
Phoned my broker who didn't want to know in that nice kind of insurance salesman type mannor (they're only one better than child molesters). Phoned the accountants (only one better than insurance people)and they gave me the telephone runnaround for half an hour and ended up mysteriously, accidentally cutting me off. I've kind of written it off although you would think that the accountants ('he spits')are being paid enough to at least write to us to say 'sorry pal... but there's nothin'in the pot'
let us all know if satisfaction is to be had!........

Yeah, got my dosh back pro rata. I'd paid on my credit card, like I do with all big purchases. A short call and a letter to Goldfish and they sorted it. Apart from slight confusion caused by me identifying the wrong debit on my card the whole thing went smoothly.
I guess the broker or someone else up the chain is owed the money now. Feel sorry for them if they have not managed to claim anything back, but they take a gamble when accepting credit card payments. I took 'insurance' by paying by credit card.

I was with Independent ('family fleet') but luckily for me, at renewal time their quote for two cars was the same as three cars had been the year before - so I bailed out.
I understand there's no back-up/compensation scheme for motor insurance, unlike the one that banks use which pay back 90% of your account. But the credit card route is an excellent idea - joint liability is very useful. Both my CC providers have always been helpful in disputes and very much on 'my' side. (Which makes a change from a certain ISP known as V**!)

R U sure about motor insurance not being under written? 3 or 4 years ago when Zenith went tits up I was refunded, and I'm pretty certain it was from a general compensation fund of some sort. Pro rata, 90% I think.
If the firm has been put into administration/liquidation , I'm pretty sure the administrators/liquidators names will have been published as a matter of public record. They should be able to tell you were you stand.

I got the original letter about Independent from my broker, rang them and re-insured with a new company. I then claimed the original Inde. money back from my credit card, and got a pro-rata payment without any problem.
2 weeks later I got a letter from the broker telling me that unless I spoke to the credit card company and got the Inde. money returned to them they would cancel my new policy!!
Suffice to say they didn't have a leg to stand on, they couldn't a thing.
Cheers

God's tits, that WAS a long time ago!
Luckily I was a long way through my year's insurance with them, but no, now you mention it, I never did see any refund.
Hey ho, more of my hard-earned wasted. Luckily I just stocked-up on Belgian rocket fuel at dirt-cheap prices in France, so maybe I can poke the Chancellor in the eye at least...
