Definition of a Classic Car?
Discussion
It should either sum up the spirit of it's period, such as the 60's E-type, the 70's Ford Capri or the 80's 911 Turbo (to name only a few) ... or it should be so damn brilliant in any number of ways to mark down straight away as a future classic or, a contemporary car in the true "classic" mould.
Modern cars I would put in this later category are the TVR Griffith, BMW 850, Aston DB7 (even with it's flaws) ... there are however many many more which we will all undoubtedly disagree with ... which is a good job really

I've noticed that modern TVRs seem to be considered "classics", eg appearing at the Classic Car Show.
This is fine by me as an owner but I had always thought of classic cars as old ones.
What do people feel is the definition then??
The THEME of the show was 'first and last' how the stand shows this is up to the stands/clubs, In reply to one part, the TVR NEC stand won a price reflectiing how well they thought of it. the 2nd part is anything...IMHO Bentley do a good job now. This is fine by me as an owner but I had always thought of classic cars as old ones.

Aren't you forgetting the Chimaera, particularly green (the fastest) ones........?Modern cars I would put in this later category are the TVR Griffith, BMW 850, Aston DB7 (even with it's flaws) ... there are however many many more which we will all undoubtedly disagree with ... which is a good job really

This is an argument that is always cropping up in classic magasines, some people think if it isn't an old Bentley or it hasn't cost half a million to buy and restore,it's not a classic. It's all in the eye of the beholder in my oppinion,if somebody thinks their battered Allegro or 80's Cavalier is a classic, that's fine by me.I own a 93 Chimaera and a 57 Austin A35,in my oppinion they are both classics yet worlds apart.Somebody came up to me at a classic meet once and asked why I have come in a 90's TVR because its not a classic. He then showed me his car, which was the most poorly constructed kit car I have ever seen based on an 80's Escort,I just smiled and walked off.

... no.Chimps may be in the classic British sports car mould, but the Griff is widely acknowledged as the best looking car TVR ever made.
This is a question that has been debated and will continue to be debated forever!
People will argue that such and such car is a classic and so and so car isn't, but I have a very simple way of defining one. Basically a classic car to me is somthing I grew up with or remember as a child or came before that.
To you guys it may be Austin Healy 3000's, MGB GT's, Corsairs or MK1 Granadas.
I grew up with XR3's, Peugeot 205's and MK1 and 2 Golfs. I will always look upon them fondly and think of them as classics, as I get older I'll look back and do the same with current cars (I'm 28).
At the end of the day, who really cares as long as we enjoy what we have?
I would regard my current car as a 'modern classic', though I'm sure many of you will disagree. Though where would all the fun be if we agree'd all the time?

There isn't one.
Some insurers who offer discounted rates for the 'older' car use this term. They each have their own definition, perhaps there are common phrases in their definitions. In the end there isn't a definitive definition. It's like saying 'beautiful girl', different people have different opinions and everyone’s opinion is valid to them, eye of the beholder.

Get you a few photos of that receptionist taken and posted and quit making fun of your dear old mum.
I, getting to like this you know. I might have to get some lettering for the top of the windscreen for the london tunnels run later this month, "NOT MY RECEPTIONIST" over the pasengers side!Edited by davido140 on Thursday 15th November 22:02
