Bad news guys and girls. Whilst making my way to PistonFeast on Saturday my Tasmin decided to brake down on the M40, about a mile from junction 12 and only about 32 miles from Stratford-upon-Avon Basically the engine suddenly started to make a rattling noise, then a puff of gey smoke and 300 yards down the road I'm engulfed totally in grey smoke. Fourtunately I was able to pull over onto the hard shoulder quickly. Looks like it could be terminal.....

This is the last thing that I need right now. Don't think that I will be ablt to make the next Mid Essex meet either

TVR-Nut, passed you a few times at the weekend but didn’t get a chance to say hello.

Just be thankful that if the worst comes to the worst a 2.8 engine won’t be too painful on the wallet, do you know what is actually wrong?

For the ford engines I’d recommend Ferriday Engineering if your going to get your engine fixed, they did the heads for me when I had the S, extremely reasonable prices and very good quality work, the car made 180 bhp on the rollers at Sanspeed.

You could try and find a low mileage 2.8 lump from the breakers.

Was just constructing an email with some advice, but I'll post it here instead. As PaulV says Ferriday Engineering produce some superb engines like the ones on here http://ferriday.co.uk/performance.htm and well priced too. Their website is here www.ferriday.co.uk

Others are as follows.

www.burtonpower.com/system/index.html

and

www.oilypages.com/links.asp?page=Ford

hope this helps

If I was in Mark's position, I'd find out exactly what needed repairing and then get something like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2421499228&category=21654 for some donor parts. Burton and Ferriday make good engines but they can be hard on the wallet.

I think this is very good Value....

[quote]3150cc V6 Cologne - £1645.00
Based on the original Capri, Sierra or Granada 2.8 block, this unit adds 25% to the torque output and produces more power and torque at all rev ranges using only standard heads and injection equipment. Suitable for turbo and/or supercharger applications, this unit is capable of producing big power! Also available is a 3.0 short motor for self build at £850.00

There is Burton Power in Ilford as posted by flasher. Theses were the No1 Ford performance specialists for a long time, and I have used then some 18 years ago on a Mk1 XR2. that I got to go 0-60 in 6.2 seconds on a normally aspirated engine on a standard twin carb and sub 6 seconds using DCO’s

Also in Essex there is also a rolling road specialist for ford engines just off the A127 in Basildon, I've used these before and again they are great people.

There is always good after bad, and I would say that this MIGHT be a good time to put a great uprated engine in the TIV...

Who's that?!? Sure mine could do with a tune-up...

My 3000S currently has a Burton-tuned engine in it so I know they're rather good with Ford lumps. If Mark's budget can stretch to one of their engines, then I can recommend them too, but if not, there are 1000's of places along the old A13 from Rainham to Hadleigh who must have some good Capri/Granada/Sierra 2.8i engines that would do the job.

I've used John Mowatt at Pound Lane for rolling-road tune ups and very good they are too. A search on Google should give you some contact details.

Watch it with those breakers' yard 2.8s. When my Tasmin engine went to that scrappy in the sky, I had to buy three V6s to get a good one. Remember that a lot of old Crapis and Grandads get neglected; lack of oil changes often leading to crank wreckage (which from the descrption is what old TVR-NUT had happen - one possibility being that the hex oil pump drive sheared (they all do that sir)).
If you get a used one (as opposed to recon or a 'hot' motor), whip the sump off and pull a main and a big-end bearing cap off. If there are any marks, scores, bare copper or (as on one of the units I got) the melted white metal of the shells is DRIPPING off the rods - give it back sharpish.
I paid £100 for the ex-XR4i engine that I finally used, one bonus being that it had unleaded-ready heads on (post-85 Ford standard). It would've cost more to have the old heads modded...!

...Mark!....

So sorry to hear your news.

Still...with all the advice the guys are giving, lets hope it will be back on the road soon.

This is one model I would hate to lose from our meet.......

I wouldn't want to lose the Tasmin either.....

One things for sure is that that engine hasn't done too badly compared to TVR's latest tat on offer. We all sit here moaning about getting 12k out of a speed six, but this beauty did about 70K in a 23 year life before giving up the ghost!! I'd like to see one of TVR's engines last that long!

Keep your chin up Mark, it will be even better with a nice new, a quicker lump in it!

Thanks for your help and advice so far everbody - I really, really apreciate it. Dunno what I'm going to do yet as I haven't had much time to think about it. Will prob give Ferriday and Burton Power a call when I get a chance.

Not sure what actually happend to the engine or what caused it. The only thing that I can add to my original post is that there was no sign of oil or water on the road after it happend. I also checked the fluid levels etc before I left home. Also no sign of oil or water in the engine bay or on the engine itself. The only other thing is that the dipstick appears to be stuck as I can only get it a quarter of the way out. Not being very mechanically minded doesn't help either. I must admit that I would like to upgrade/uprate the engine, but I haven't got loads of money to spend on it and I have a nasty feeling that the insureance co would bump up the insureance if I did this anyway....

Anyway thanks once again for the help, especially flasher and Mr Freefall.

Chin up mate. Bollocks to the insurance company, I wouldn't have though it would make any difference at all on a classic policy like yours.

Keep smiling!!
