Just for a bit of fun.

...If you had £6k to spend on a TVR, what would you get? I'm hoping to be in this position in a few months time - yes, I know again - and thought I'd stir up the old 'S Vs Wedge Vs Classic (M/Taimar) Vs Save up for a Chimera' debate smile

I'd have picked up the crash damaged cerb on ebay for 4 grand, thrown a new wishbone, and a 2nd hand front corner on it and some primer and had a laugh...

Probably an S of some description.
There are many who have picked up a Chim for that money but at that price they're right at the bottom end and I'd rather save and have the choice of the decent ones out there.

To be honest I would need a bit more than 6 grand to do what I want to a Cerbera..." nuts

Miss bloody read the op... Read it as what could I do to a TVR for 6k

more on topic: wouldn't a low end Chim be something you chould get for 6k?

edit: bugger of a mistake...

I get the impression the S-series is rather more practical as a day-to-day all weather proposition than the wedges? That said I do quite fancy the idea of a 350i - also rather like the FHC wedge.

I've heard a lot about impending doom everytime you start a wedge. What's the steering feedback like on them? Do they rotate very quickly? Never quite found out what is so scary about them! From what I remember enquiring before the S is rather more forgiving to drive and I suppose I marginally prefer the classic looks of the S to the more 'out there' styling of the wedge, but the V8 would be a real laugh!

A white 350i was my baptism into TVR ownership. And my first car to have a V8 (an old ex-MOD Landie aside).

Looking back it wasnt perfect, but nothing major went wrong with it and I loved every moment I owned it smile

For your budget I think you'd be looking at a V6 'S'? When what you really want is a V8 under the bonnet wink

Go for an S series, i had the V6 and still missing it. Its practical and cheap to maintain and of course very quick, sounds fantastic and is very chuckable around corners, feels and is much lighter than a chimaera. No new tvr will keep up on rough country lanes. Also the chassis is much easier to inspect and maintain as its not tucked in the fiberglass floor, like you get on later tvrs and wedges.

Yeah, I don't know when the V8S's come in, but I seem to remember they are curiously close to decent Chimera money!

Whilst I'd love the V8, I think the exterior of the S is marginally nicer (albeit very different) and I much prefer the interior to that on the wedges I've seen and I get the impression they're a bit more user friendly? Either car would have to be used a reasonable amount of the time (the idea being I want something I can get more use out of than my current fun car which is devoid of a proper windscreen, let alone a hood) and so a reasonably watertight hood etc. would be pretty much essential.

Not asking a lot I know, but I'd like MX5 practicality combined with the sort of 'real car' driving experience I get from something like my kit car. I'd use the latter all the time if it wasn't basically a track car and I want something that can give that sort of feel for maybe 4 or 5 days a week, not just evenings and weekends.

Sounds like you're gonna have to get out there and drive a few examples. Tough life innit! wink

Damn it!

Well, to be fair I'm not going to buy anything for a few months so it would be a little early to start testdriving. The other reason I try to get an idea on here is simple - if I'd owned say, an S and a 350i at different times I'd have driven them both hard enough to make a decent comparision, but on a 20 minute test drive I'd be paranoid about denting someone elses toy. Maybe I'm a bit of a wimp, but however committed I am to buying something I wouldn't want to risk putting in the ditch until it was in my name.

After that, game on... biggrin

Oh.... Just seen my business bank account. Combine that with what's in my personal account and I have... far more than I've ever had before!

woohoowoohoowoohoo

It's still a pittance by PHer standards, but it means something like a 350i or S1 is in fact well within my grasp now. Even by the time I've given myself a holiday and paid the company tax and accountancy fees I should only be a months income off the cost of a decent example. The thing is - if I keep the funds in the company as much as possible and try to be a little frugal until April I'd probably have enough for a V8S or Chimera and by that time I'd have the major benefit of being over 25 and hence many more insurance options.

As you may have gathered I'm not the most financially competent person on the planet and I was just going through my bank statements (slow day at work...) and then realised I'm not quite as broke as I thought. It was a genuine shock, albeit rather a pleasant one.

Going back to the original question - which is a more practical proposition; an S or a wedge? Any significant differences in weather protection or reliability? Dare I ask, how does the 350i's V8 compare to the V6 for fuel economy?
