Well this seems the obvious place to ask.......
Should I buy a Chimaera??
I have a budget of @£15K but if i'm honest i'm absolutely terrified of the prospect of being kept poor every month? After weeks of deliberation i'm poised to become a TVR owner but would really appreciate some honest advice.
Buying one of these beasts seems to be one thing but can I expect to pay £££££'s to keep the thing on the road???
Having owned/driven mainly German cars i'm used to almost 100% reliability and very reasonable running costs. Should I take the plunge??

Purchase price and lifetime maintenance should come in at less than $64million.
I'm sure some owners present and past will be along in a while, but in the meantime there is a classified section on Pistonheads that has a section covering Chimaeras you may care to drool over. Click on the "Links" tab then "classifieds" on the drop down menu.
As a non TVR owner the only advice I can give is the alledged reliability issues can be partially overcome by getting a specialist TVR outfit to check any purchase over before handing over your cash. No offence to the AA, RAC etc, but you need to get a specialist inspection done by someone who knows what to look for with each model.

As you've got this far the answer will have to be 'yes' - because if you don't and you chicken out, you'l always wonder 'what if?/ I wish I had' etc. So you will have to do it!
Under the skin the Chimaera and the Griffith are almost identical, so a lot of the advice you see for the Girff will be relevant too. There are many threads started by people in your position, so if you search the archives you'll get plenty of info. As well as book research, go to your nearest TVRCC meeting. You don't need a TVR to join and any true enthusiast will enjoy telling you all about his car and answering questions.
By getting to know the cars and the people around them, you can make informed decisions and the chances of buying one you will be happy with are much higher.

i drove germans before as well. what i can tell you is that the chim has cost about the same to run as the old audi coupe i had before. this was bought from an audi dealer, with 'FSH', but needed a hell of a lot doing to it - and needed regular visits to the dealers despite having covered only 65k when i bought it. you've been lucky with your previous cars, is all i can suggest, and with anything built by humans there is always the chance that you will get a wonky one. however i can honestly say that i don't regret buying mine, or any of the money i have spent on it. i may be poorer finacially, but much richer in life experience.
buy one and you are living life - even if you sell it a year later. i said i'd keep mine for a year, and then look at the situation again. i'm quarter the way into my second year and i've done 18k miles in mine, and whilst i do think about changing it, every time i get pi55ed off with it iget people coming up to me telling me how lucky i am, what a lovely car it is, etc. etc. - believe me when i say that if you are even considering it then you MUST DO IT.
the benefits massively out-weight the downsides, and after all, it is only money.

I am thinking of buying something German but I am worried that I will be poor every month seeing what has happened to some of my friends. I have had 9 TVRs and I concerned that I will loose the 100% Grin factor and the acknowledgemnet from the general public that I am driving a great British car.
I am worried that I might have to spend £1800 getting a hetaer fixed like on a Merc, or £800 for a set os suspension bushes on a BMW or the fact that a set of gaskets from Porsche was £1500. I am not used to spending that amount of money and coupled with the stigma associated with these cars puts me off.
What should I do?

You get good ones and bad ones. Judge the car against an equivalent performance car and they are relatively cheap to run. They are more expensive than a Eurobox but they have the best grin factor of them all.
There is a buyers guide and info on my website. If your heart is saying yes then you should listen.

Just do it nothing ventured nothing gained etc if you dont like it you can always sell it
Before you part with any money get the car inspected by somebody who knows TVR's (if buying privately) that should reduce the chances of buying a dog
