Planning a Scotland Tour, spending a few nights in Edinburgh. Struggling to find hotels with parking facilities that are anywhere near the centre of the city. So, any experiences, good or bad, of NCP type parking of their P&J, in the city centre? Will it be safe?

Any suggestions/recomendations on hotels?

Hi

I've used Roxburghe (west end on George Street) and Balmoral (east end, Princes Street), both underground & secure.

others.... well in the open or none at all.

If you're looking for rooms try....

I did look at the Roxburghe, but stated they had very limited parking, first come first served, any ideas roughly how many spaces they have?

Dare I say it, but the park and ride at Heriot-Watt (Riccarton) is pretty good. Depends what you're parking but very high footfall and a manned ticket office throughout the day.

Alternatively, there's another park an ride at Hermiston Gate, but in a rougher bit of town. I wouldn't feel too comfortable leaving something there over a couple of nights.

Both of these are 15 minutes drive from the airport. Hermiston will get you a train into the city centre. Riccarton will get you a bus.

Bear in mind that the "train" option above is in a retail park, where they have introduced a charge for more than 3 hours parking - £60 I think it is.

Personally I wouldn't park my car overnight in either of those car parks.

We want to stay in a hotel close to the centre, so we can do the tourist thing during the day, and walk to a restaurant/pub in the evening. So the park and ride idea doesn't really suit, but thanks anyway.

Having driven for the previous 8 days, I was hoping to not use the car whilst there! Especially as I will driving back to Essex afterwards!

So I either find a hotel with parking, or leave my Tam in an NCP (which I am a bit worried about!)

Probably about 15ish in total - Place has been done up recently and wasn't too bad.

Got a space no problem and that was a Saturday PM

Cheers

Nick
Ps - If knowing they have the parking is your problem, then I'd certainly go there. Metered centre of road parking is available in George Street just outside so you may have to land there if the place is busy until a space becomes available. As I said, I had no problem getting a space.

We stopped at http://www.thenorthumberlandhotel.co.uk/ in September, 5 TIVs ...no trouble, car park is at the rear of the Hotel and quiet. On a main Bus route to the centre, we went into Town to eat each night and did the touristy bit in the day. Not overly plush but clean and a nice bar for us and a very good breakfast.

It's another option.

Near to an electrical business we own - good area. About 3 miles south of town on main artery.

the raddison has its own private multi storey carpark, its free when staying there & its on the royal mile, less than 5min walk from the castle.left the tiv there for 3 nights with no worries-lovely hotel but thought it a little pricey.

Thanks as always guys. Can always rely on some good advice on here. Northumberland looks pretty good, and bus into town is fine with us, cab back.

I did try the Raddision, as you say ideally suited and carpark, but just too steep I think, £130 a night without brekkie.

Keep em coming though.

My sister lives on Roxburgh, I had real trouble trying to park there. Dont even bother trying to pull a fly one with on-street parking, there are so many traffic wardens ready to pounce. Fed up paying a fortune and having to get up early doors to move the car to a different space etc. I found the best thing to do is park in the multi-storey at Ocean terminal and get the bus back into town. The parking is free, dry and fairly secure.

Hey Ian

A little advice from my Edinburgh girlfriend...

http://www.festival-inns.co.uk/hotels_holding.htm

They have a chain of hotels/town houses in Edinburgh and most have some kind of parking facitility,

The Bank Hotel - is on The Royal Mile (pretty much as central as you can get) and has a discount card for the NCP next door which is undercover and safe enough (and each of the rooms is themed round some kind of Scottish inventor) - this is next door to the Raddison but will definitely be cheaper with a proper Scottish breakfast wink

The Royal Ettrick - is a town house based about 10 mins from the city centre with buses outside that run every couple of mins – taxi back should cost about £10 max. They have car parking at the side of the building but it’s in a nice area so there shouldn’t be any problems.

Hudson Hotel – is a new hotel basically on Princes Street, there’s a 24hour NCP about 5 mins walk away (behind Edinburgh Castle), although gets used by drunk people as a route to and from the Grassmarket at night…it’s safe enough though with CCTV and wee man that sits in etc

Murrayfield Hotel – don’t know about what parking they have on site but the streets are free to park in (although that was a year ago and the ever expanding yellow lines might have made it that far by now)

Disclaimer - obviously any decision is taken at your own risk wink
