Sorry if this has appeared on here before. Quick question regards the accumate charger.

It is currently plugged in to the mains and the Tamora charging a nearly flat battery. Desperately want to go out in the car. Can I try starting the car while its plugged into the mains or do I risk blowing up my block of flats!!!

Cheers.

The Accumate is a *conditioner*, not a charger. If you want to charge a flat battery, get a battery charger.

accumate will recondition a dead battery...takes about 3 days.

This one did not put anything in my battery and it was plugged into it for a week. Will an accumate save my battery or will I need a new one?

depends if the plates are warped etc by overcharging.

if its just flat...it will recover. I've done this several times on different cars/bastteries.

Why didn't the thing I have charge the battery?

Andy, how long is the standard lead and how long would delivery take?

I did use my jump leads the other day and give it a 75 mile round trip, it did put a little charge in the battery but it's gone again, doesn't even turn the starter. Should a journey of that length charged it up more?

I've never charged it up before.

Yes if (i) the battery is in good condition (if it's older than 4 years take it to the council recycle and pop into a local motors factors and pick up a new one for significantly less than a tank of Optimax) and (ii) the alternator output is correct. You should also check the 100 amp fuse that protects the alternator, located near to the starter motor - costs 60p but a bu$$er to replace road side when it goes.

a 45min journey will definately be enough to charge the battery, as Hut49 says.

it does sound like the battery is stuffed, or the alternator isn't charging it. The batt would have run the car until it was flat/then not been able to recharge.

if you have 14 volts on the dash meter, most likely cause is the battery, tho the fuse is a possibility.

andy

I'll probably go for a new battery.
