Fundraising for The Motor Neurone Disease Association
Discussion
Hi Everyone,
I’m a long term Pistonheader (I got my first TVR, a V8S back in 1996). In 2000 I sold this (still regret it!) and bought a Tuscan. Due to our triplets which arrived in 2001, the days of leisure vanished quickly and the Tuscan had to go.
Last year (with our boys nearing 7) I had started thinking about getting another TVR, possibly even tracking down my V8S and trying to convince it’s owner to sell it back to me! Unfortunately in November I was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (ALS) which some of you may know a bit about. I won’t bore you with the details, other than to say it’s a condition which rapidly changes your outlook on life. So three days after the diagnoses I popped down to Fernhurst (where I had purchased the other TVRs) to see what they had. I knew that without power steering I wouldn’t be able to cope for long with a V8S, so the Griffith was the obvious choice and as it happened there was a 1999 Griff 500 with the right spec, history and price tag. The guys at Fernhurst were as usual really helpful and I had the car on my driveway the next weekend.
Anyway, the reason for this post, other than to reintroduce myself as a new TVR owner, is that I am trying to raise some money for the MND association. Apart from driving TVRs, I have always been a keen cyclist and despite the old legs now being pretty wobbly I can still get around on 2 wheels. I am planning a 50 mile cycle at the end of the February and am looking for sponsors to help me raise money for the association. If you would like to contribute then goto

I hope nobody minds me using the forum for this request, I've never been keen on going round asking for money for sponsored events as it puts people in a difficult position and many already donate to charities of their own choice. But i'm making an exception on this as I am really keen to be able to, with the help of others, raise money to help fight this devastating disease and help others who suffer from it.
Back to the subject of TVRs, I will be going down to Fernies next week to get the sports exhaust mod done - The catted 500 is just too quiet.
Cheers
Steve

Hi Steve! Yep, would be delighted to sponsor you
My Father suffered with Motor Neurone Disease and I know how much effort this challenge will be for you! (He was also a great fan of my TVR!)
Congratulations on your new Griffith!

Please would you post the date of your 'challenge'?
YHM!

OK,
I have now enabled my e-mail!!!

Well I got the bike out today for the 1st time in 2 months to see if I could remain upright and found that as long as I dont stop I'm OK!
So for safety reasons we are avoiding roads as much as possible and in order to avoid steep inclines we are trying to stick to a route along towpaths of rivers and canals. So far we have a route planned from the furthest point east cyclable on the thames along to Weybridge where the Thames path becomes footpath only. From Weybridge we are following a canal route to Guildford. From here the the route is still to be finalised.
When coming up with the idea I was conscious of the fact that 50 miles is not exactly marathon distance in cycling terms but I do have to be realistic. I have a couple of fellow cyclist friends to make sure I get to the end and don't get tempted by the watering holes along the way (or Wey!!)
Thanks for your support and any additional interest you can drum up within the community will be much appreciated.

Hi Steve,
I think we just made the first donation on your just giving page, sorry to hear about your illness, we have a few close friends whose partners have dealt with the same thing, one of whom works closely with the MND association. If you feel she can be of any assistance to you let me know and I will put you in contact with her. Good luck with your ride. Dean and Alison
This is a terrible illness and needs a lot more research on it, come on guys donate what you can.

Excellent. This weather has been amazing and it's coming back for the weekend, so clear the decks!
I have been a bit slack - but if I send you an email, do you have a sponsorship form for the non-computer people to use?
Hi Steve, congratulations on raising so much money for a very worthy cause. I was wondering if you could tell me, either on here or via email on my profile, where you will be departing from in Kew? I work in London and if I get the chance, I would very much like to come along and wish you Bon-voyage on the day.

Hi there, I'm also very pleased with the generosity of all who have sponsored me. With Tax relief and additional off-line pledges the total stands at around £7.5K so I am now aiming for £10K !!
We are starting from Kew this thursday at around 11am. Exact point will depend on the easiest drop off point by car to the towpath. I think it will be on the Key gardens side, somewhere between the gardens and the bridge.
Went out on the bike briefly again today and the old legs were quite achey, but hopefully that will shake off after a mile or two!
