There's a saying in the security industry that a fence only keeps out those who don't really want to get in. The trick is, as in this case, to make the effort not worth the reward.

Oddly enough, dogs only give the illusion of security, although it is often enough. My firearms unit were taken for a day out to an American Airforce base on the Norfolk/Suffolk borders and whilst there we were told how to fight off a dog using a stick and also with just bare hands. We actually saw a film of an unarmed chap killing an AAF guard dog, although we were told that a second dog chewed bits off him. It all seemed quite simple and I once went to a local villian's house only for the occupant to produce a bull mastif. I pulled out my truncheon and said to the woman, "If that dog attacks me, or gets close enough to do so, I will break its nose." My plan was that, if she let it go I would get back into my car: I'm not stupid. But she swore a bit then put the dog into the house. I even explained to her the procedures for dealing with a dog attack. She called them 'cruel'. I asked her how she would describe setting a dog on someone.

There was a complaint which was upheld (informally resolved) but the woman, if not the dog, was a lot more polite and cooperative after that.

I know of a caravan that was stolen despite the fact that the wheels had been removed as well as the tow bar ball. It was stopped en route and returned to the owner who evidently asked what he should do in future. He was told to stay in hotels. You have to accept that, if a thief really wants something of yours, they will find ways of getting it.

I have a couple of 14 stone Pyrnean Mountain dogs, which tend to ward off all but the most determined muppets in society.
A few years ago some friends of ours had their house broken into and nothing was taken. A fortnight later they had a knock on the door from the Police, who told them they had arrested a couple of muppets that had done an armed robbery on a petrol station. They were able to track them down as the CCTV showed one of the perps had his arm in a plaster cast. Max, their Pyr had broken his arm in two places in their attempt to burgle their home the fortnight before.

Edited cos i can't spell

A bewildered old man gave an address to a young woman who decided to help him. She walked him to the house and knocked on the door. An older woman answered it and started to berate the old boy for 'keep coming around' (this was the third time). The young woman said something along the lines of: Hold on, I'm the one who brought him, and then she became the target of abuse. She took hold of the bloke's arm and went to walk away when a dirty great Alsation cross jumped over the gate from the kitchen and attacked the young woman, biting her on the leg, arm and face. In an attempt to justify the dog's aggressive behaviour, the older woman said, "Well, she screamed. That'll make any dog worse."

I gave the woman the option of putting the dog down herself and being prosecuted for a dangerous dog (this was the third reported incident) or the council taking it into custody, we going to court for a court order to have it destroyed, charging her for board and food for the dog, and still taking her to court for a dangerous dog. She chose the latter, hired a brief, lost both cases and, in an attempt to mitigate the fine, said that she'd have to sell the house to pay it. I wasn't there but I'm told the magistrate said something along the lines: 'You won't have to buy food for the dog so there's a saving.'
