Suprise call from Adrian Flux
Discussion
I have just been blown away by a phone call to say my policy with Flux is after being in force for 5months is null and void!!!!
The reason they give is my chim needs a cat somthing or other as an alarm.
Can anybody tell me what the standard alarm is and has anybody else had a similer call. they say they have made a genuine mistake.
I wonder now what my rights are. My last policy was with Norwich Union direct. This policy through Flux is also with Norwich union, why should there now be such a panic?

I was given a photocopied bit of paper with my car that said that the combination of the Meta immobilizer and microwave thingy meant that my alarm system was Thatcham Cat 1....
The document actually says that the alarm is cat 1 but because of the way it is installed it is rated at cat 2 (or some such) There's a copy of the letter in the SH Bibletvrbob said:

Apparently the Metas used were taken off the approved list in 1999 (iirc).
Therefore, you need to confirm it was installed before then, which is the point of the letter in the bible.
I sent them a copy of that letter and they were happy enough with it.

Never had a problem with flux until when i insured my griff with them over 3 years ago on a 93 griff.
They informed me about it into the insurance, so had to fork out another £270 to £300 for a cat1 alarm with someone recomended by them...
However since then i have been with pearts as they always came out cheaper when i upped the milage to 5000

It is a while since I had any dealings with alarm installations but from memory a Cat 1 alarm had to be fitted by a special trained & registered fitter. I remember at a garage I once worked the auto electrician had to be sent on a £600 course after which he became a Thatcham registered fitter.
Again from memory, which I may be corrected, the Cat 1 have a three stage immobiliser system with audible alarm, Cat 2 was a two stage immobiliser but does not have to have an audible alarm. The Cat 2 was a common fitment to supplement any car manufacturers standard alarm.
The insurance companies do take this seriously, after all any excuse to reject a claim
, & I heard of a garage where a Cat 1 system was fitted but the installer was not Thatcham registered, the car was subsequently stolen & the insurance company rejected the claim so the fitting garage had to pay out.
It is important that whenever you buy a car if it is fitted with a Cat 1 that you get given the installation certificate as this is what your insurance company will ask for. If there is no certificate the system is worthless & you will need to have a new system fitted. I do not know if any of the car manufacturers have started fitting Cat 1 systems yet.

I got this with my 96 Cerb, not sure if it's the same for A Chim

If you mess about with the quote system on Norwich Union's site, it's quite interesting to see what they class as important.
Having A Cat 2 alarm as opposed to no alarm ,saves you A fiver, you get another fiver off for a tracker system, and A further fiver off for keeping the car in A garage instead of the road.
Unless you can find someone to fit the alarm, tracker & build you a garage for less than fifteen quid, I can't see the point.
Can't Flux just charge you the difference between A policy with an alarm and a policy without an alarm ?
