Ok I you took a bare block to a specialist. and asked them to test it, and fit new bearings.

They said the block is fine but needs hone, so I say ok.
They they say that when they was going to hone it they found the bores was oval, being a 4.0 you can't get +0.020 Pistons, so the only option was new liners, so I paid the extra to have TOP HATS.

Then after them fitting them they call me up and say the threads for the heads are all knackered, and would be another £235 to fix.
I asked why they did not tell me before me agreeing for £900 for tophats. as I could get a new block cheaper then the £1135 they now want to charge me.

Answer you never asked us to check the threads (FFS). but I would have thought they would have checked the block before doing £900 of work to it.

Makes me wonder if the lines even needed doing. so call specialist's my arse.

Sorry to hear that. I can't believe that they didn't check the block before doing that amount of work to it though...

That does not sound good ..

But I don't think a new block would come with top haps and fitting the top hats plus the cam bearings plus the dreaded vat would probaly have cost you more (try to be positive here..)

I presume they must have pressure tested it at some point so it would have to be blanked off, normally useing the head bolt stud holes ,so this should have shown up before your ovality problem ?I smell bovine excrement and i would be unhappy too, sorry that does not help you but you could ask some pointed questions (NOT the icepick).Hope you get it sorted,Tempus smile

If I had a new block would not need tophats, and cosworth, blocked don't suffer with cast shift.

Cam Bearings are only £40 fitted.
so 999 + 40 + Vat. and you have new block.

I did think that. (need to find out how they pressure tested it.)

Also that's the 1st thing I asked them to do, and it passed. should have smelled a rat then, esp as they said the bores was pitted. should have told me it's going to need work before even doing the test.

Well I've cut my losses and paid for just the TOPHATs and took the block away.

Going to take to another company to inspect, and then get the Credit card company to cancil the payment if the work is poor.

If the work done is ok, then I dont have much of a case. as I asked them to do the tophat's but anyone with half a brain should have check the block was ok before fitting £900 worth of liners.

This has blown my budget big style.

Don't worry Leigh, when you line up for your first race all will be forgotten.

The threads in the head may be a bit rough but why don't you install a set of studs. They're much better then bolts and I doubt the threads are so bad that you won't be able to screw them in properly and permanantly.

I agree, go over to a stud kit. They are much stronger. Sad story though.

Well I've was going to fix studs anyway. but thought I still want good thread's esp as you do studs up to a higher torque.

I think I will fit time-serts.
