Taking the cerbera to tvr mania 2003 at bruntingthorpe this weekend and planning to have a blast on the runway. This will be the 1st time i've driven it off the public road, so can't wait However crash helmets are required, as i imagine they are for track days etc? Does anyone know what 'safety standard' is required for these events and how to go about getting a suitable helmet by buying/hiring/borrowing?
Cheers
Andy

Well the last time I was at Brunters you could have got away wearing a cycle helmet I don't think they have any for hire but you can buy one which is to the correct standard for anywhere between £50-£500 just pop into your local m/bike accessory shop and tell them you want a lid for a car trackday

Oh dear. We were directed to the bike shop for a track day by the organisers
Looking at the info with the tickets it just asks for "helmets in good condition and of adequate specification"
So if the specs are being checked, what are they accepting so I am not disapointed on the day? Or do I need not worry
Mine is BS6658-85 type b

Its all a mess at the moment if you ask me - BS symbols are no more because the Eurocrats are sticking their oar in and the labels have changed beginning with 05.

No one I spke to had a clue what was replacing the Typa BS symbols.

The advice I got from someone in the know, was that most track days look to see if it looks like a helmet and as long as it isnt one for a BMX, then all is ok - seems silly to me to have all these regs and not abide by them but ho hum.

Very friendly chap in the Honda motorcycle shop in Salisbury sorted me out with the appropriate full face dome - very snazzy it looks to - £89.

See you all there in Saturday

HH.

Hi Andy
I went through the same anguish earlier this year, advised not to get bike helmets as they are designed to withstand different shocks to those administered by a car accident, I chose Bieffe GP Racer Helmet
(www.grandpri.com) from grand prix race wear @ silverstone. Not only were they snell approved they also fitted the best. So you have one head and look after it the best way you can.
Good luck and see ya at Brunters.

Last time drivers & passengers were doing the speed run without crash helmets

I cant understand why Motorbike Helmets wouldnt do.

Surely they are the best for withstanding the absolute amount of shock as more likely to meet the Road than a car racing helmet.

The only thing i would say they would make a difference is vision, as i believe car Racing Helmets have a larger hole/apperture.

Would be very interested to know the differences

Hi BB
Im not a crash helmet expert but here are the things that I was told
1. Motorcycle helmets are designed to withstand a greater amount of friction tolerence, ie scuffing along a road
2. Car helmets can better withstand repeated blows ie against a roll cage or door frame.
3. Car helmets are more fire resistant
4. The appature I found was smaller on car helmets.
5. Cycle helmets have more padding around the neck.

Can anyone else shed some light onto the subject as the above is what I was told a believed when visiting both motorcycle and car helmet suppliers.
A motorcycle showroom near to Silverstone actually refused to sell me a helmet that they knew was to be used in a car. When someone actually turns business away by the way of proper advice I tend to trust them.

I'll be interested in following this thread as it is an ongoing subject.
