Can anyone tell me what 'on retention' means when relating to a private plate?
Thanks

It is kept on a certificate and not attributed to a vehicle. The retention certificate can be sold/bought and you use it to transfer the number to your own vehicle.

Does this help?

Not sure. I've a Tuscan. The plate wasn't included due to price, and they were going to sell it seperately as it was 'on retention', and therefore the car i've bought would revert to its origional reg.
Anyway, I ended up paying extra for the private plate. Do I need to do anything to ensure ownership of the plate transfers to me ? The Dealer says not.

If the plate was on retention, it was not "on the car".

If you have agreed to pay extra for the number, then they must have either re-registered the car with the personal number, or it wasn't yet on retention It is easy to confirm one way or the other, because the V5 will have the registration number on it.

Have you taken delivery of the car, if so which number is on the V5.
If not, just make sure that they do the necessary transfer.

If it is a dealer, i'm sure they will make sure all is above board.

Good luck, and enjoy your Tuscan!

If you have bought the car,all the documents with it should have the private number on,if they havn`t theres a problem. You should have documents from the DVLA indicating which registration should be on the car.

If the plate is back on the car then you don't have to do anything.
IIRC, if the plate is still on retention then the owner of the plate and holder of the retention certificate has to post the crtificate back to the DVLA and nominate you as the hew holder. They then send the certificate back to him and he needs to forward it on to you. This you can then take to your local DVLA office and they'll give you an new tax disc and a letter of entitlement that allows you to get some plates 'officially' made.

Pick the car up on Thursday, so it sounds as if all I need to do is make sure the 'private' registraion is mentiond on the V5 document and all will be ok. I will talk it through with them.
Thanks all.

Yes, ensure that the V5 relates to the vin number and car that you have purchased.

You must be careful if buying form a dealer as they are not generally the registered keeper of the vehicle. If they have sold the vehicle to you with the number and the V5 supports the this via the private sale to them then its ok if the previous owner has the retention certificate issued by the local VL office then they will remain the legitimate "owner" of the plate.
