Anyone used RPI's A+R Ignition amp module? Says it gives up to 50kV and a 5bhp gain on a 3.5V8.

My old 350 wedge had one of these fitted. Not sure what the benefit was though.

My old rule of thumb in ignition components is that do not believe any bhp gains claims..

You can only gain where a component is faulty in the first place.

I would not fit one if my existing amp was OK .. but if it's suspect .. then why not.

Only true ignition bhp gain is to go fully mapped (omex bolt on) or Emerald and others..

Got one on my 400 Chimp with Tornado chip and magnecors; it runs beautifully and will rev to 6,250 if you let it. I did have a complete ignition upgrade with most bits replaced at the same time. RPI do change the coil to a different model when using the amp, I beleive.

I think it is mostly required for LPG conversions.

The bit about LPG is the give away, it needs a higher voltage to first ignite the spark so a more potent coil is needed. A 50kv claim is pretty silly for petrol, as the plug starts to arc at around 6-10kv so the voltage across it does not rise from this point anyway, whatever the "open circuit" voltage is of the coil. In terms of improvements of the ignition amplifier, this is a bit of a bad description, making out it gains something. In real terms all this is ,is a semiconductor switch that simply switches the 12 v ignition supply from the very small signal generated by the sensor in the distributor. All an improved "amp" can do is switch the 12 volts a little faster, that can fractionly improve the secondry voltages, not that you would notice any difference in real terms. Just save you money and use standard stuff, it works just fine.

Thanks for the responses. Have just bought a new Lucas ign amp and Bosch coil from Tim at ACT. Every day is Christmas for my car this year smile
