I WANT TO KEEP THE OLD GIRL AS ORIGINAL AS POSSIBLE (BIGGER DOOR SET UP.. EXHAUST UNDER SILL MOUNT) BUT NEED TIPS ON MAKING WHAT IVE GOT QUIETER? LATER CARS HAD BIGGER BOXES /SMALLER DOOR. ANY IDEAS GUYS?

We might pop over watching mostly Caterham and FF.
PH er Graham Waldren runs an ex ajp Tuscan in Rover format, his times might be a good bench mark.

As for original Rover engined Challenge cars 'round Oulton - i'll do some digging...

You might be able to scoop out slightly more of the sill and fit a bigger silencer tube (al la Cobra). Although I can't help feeling that if it was that simple, TVR wouldn't have gone to the trouble of making the half door and sill revision to fit the big box we have in the cars now.

Good luck !

Ask Graham...! He runs a pretty spicy 500 RV8 in his Tuscan and it is loud, but not that loud despite having what looks like a normal box down the sill... Send him a mail, his name is Graham on here.

No point... Alan has a very early Tuscan still in original RV8 spec. The cars had a 4 into 2 into 1 exhaust arrangement with a pretty ineffective silencer attached to the side of the car.

As noise regs got tighter TVR redesigned the side of the car to accomodate a much bigger twin tube silencer box. To accomodate this the passenger door became half sized and a new recessed section was grafted into the side of the car

Graham's car is my old one and has the later large silencer set up. Alan is trying to avoid modifying his car as he wants to keep it as original as possible, so Graham's set up doesn't help him I'm afraid.

Thanks andy....i think extending the sill cavity towards the rear wheel may be the way to go and either having a longer/ or two in line silencers fitted? loathe to hack the sill away but more important to pass noise.
do these supatrapp disc things work?
i know exhaust tuned lengths are important but god knows what effect having the extra length would have on performance.............i dont think that came out right !!!!!laugh

Did the RV8 cars have the 4 (2 per pipe) pre silencers between the collectors and where the pipes disappear into the wing? I'm assuming they were standard on the later/AJP cars as mine had them. If the earlier cars didn’t have them, I guess they could be added to keep the exterior looking 'period', with just an under-the-bonnet change to the pipework?

And there might also be space to put another box in the 'wing' just before the main silencer.

looks like its just a single pre box that goes through bulkhead into the short sill silencer. John Reid thought that these early systems were *** decibels!! but with an extended silencer they got them down to 104 on a good day !!! i may have fun with noise on tuesday!ears

Willie - the original cars had 2 x 4 into 2 into 1 exhausts - there was a single pipe that disappeared into the wing and to the single externally mounted exhaust 'tube'. So it might be possible to add a single silencer where the AJP cars have the 4 small ones on the down pipes, but there is not a lot of room.

How is your car? Did I read something the other day about you looking into replacing the SBC with an LS?

Cheers

Well, it was running really well - eventually. It took a while to get to the bottom of all the teething problems but I did get to the stage where I could just start it up and go for a run without too much worry, and run track days back-to-back with just fluid and nuts & bolts checks. I'd also got to the point where it stopped putting the fear of God into me and I could chuck it about a bit. But on the last track outing I had an engine problem, and when I stripped it down the outside top of the piston crowns on 7 and 8 had disintegrated. Bores look fine but the heads are a mess too. I always knew the heads were the weak point of the build as I'd saved a few pennies and kept stock heads, which seemed to give the gaskets a hard time.

So while the obvious option was just to rebuild the motor again, I did plot dropping in an LS7...if indeed an LS7 would just 'drop in'. With the chassis all powder coated and the panels all painted I wasn't keen to do any surgery, but I spotted that you could buy engine mount adapters and I just wondered if the motor would fit straight in. But it didn't take too long to conclude it wouldn't be a straight swap. So, I'm getting the block checked out right now; I guess it might need rebored and decked, then a set of new pistons and dart heads and we should be all hot to trot again smile With a few more horespower too hopefully.

Maybe the next one will be an LS7wink

Probably best to keep it simple Willie - unless you are after a new project...

Our LS2 intallation in the Sag is nearly there - should be firing it up for the first time in the next week or two and after a rolling road session to map it we'll be testing.

Did you have any issues with the front diff brackets on the chassis? Did you leave them stock?

Cheers

just starting to plot what happens next....
I'll keep the Tuscan 'as is' once I get it back on form again, but there's so much I learned and so much I would have done differently it seems a shame not to put the experience to further use.

Standard BTR diff on standard brackets. Have I missed something? Is it all going to go pear shaped with the standard brackets? With my engine position and the TKO600 (and new prop shaft obviously) it all lined up fine. I was going to put on a higher ratio diff as it's just running a 3.73 and it's really too low. Guessed a 3.23 would be better.
