confused don't know what to get for a replacement clutch, mine is slipping in third under excelleration,so was wondering what you guys are using in your high powered griffs as i don't think the standard 500 clutch is up to the job.
my car is now putting out 370 Lbs/ft and i don't want to put in a standard clutch to find out it needs replacing in a couple of months!!
this is not mega urgent as i am off to anglesey for the tvr racing from thursday till sunday, but will need to get something sorted soon!
any advice welcome.
cheers
tim.

I've got an uprated Helix one in mine sourced by Top Gear Automotive about a year ago. It's quite bitey but no problem even in traffic or around town. Rated to around 500 ft/lbs IIRC and had no problems so far. Oh and its a single plate jobbie but feels and works more like a twin plate. Gets my vote!

I have a Mcleod 10.5 inch clutch .. this requires the flywheel to be re-drilled :

Cost of the clutch is about £300 and flywheel mods about £90.

I'm certainly going to go with a smaller Helix clutch next year when I change to a T5 box.

10.5 inch McLeod

Strengthened arm (for LT77)

On the basis that there's no cheaper clutch than the one i already own : Std 5 litre TVR clutch for me, already done 17000 miles in the car the engine came out of - looked ok so re-used it with no issues so far on dyno or on track, although my weedy 355hp 5 litre only has 340lb.ftwink

Yup , I have the 'Helix'; feels little heavier than the OE clutch. No problems to date with it.

Rev, what's with the 10mm shorter bearing?

The steel sleeve that attches to the bearing has to be 10mm shorter. This is because the McLeod is 10mm taller than a Griff 500 9.5 inch clutch.

Ah,that makes sense now. Since putting in my new clutch, bearing, fork and slave, I found it awkward to get free play at the pedal. Sometimes it appears to be really good, as it should be with little ware in the pedal hole and a new clevis pin fitted, then other times it's as if there is no free play at the pedal at all. When checking the bearing against the finger springs on the pressure plate, no matter how the pedal feels there's never enough pressure that the bearing won't spin freely. Just sometimes it seems tighter up against the pressure plate. It's pretty strange.

I'm told some slave cylinders had spacers placed between them and the bell housing to introduce slack at the pushrod to slave cylinder piston. Even if that is the way to go I can't help but see that as not entirely satisfactory. All a spacer will do, if done so it works as is intended, is allow the pushrod to 'rattle' around ever so slightly so as there's no chance of hydraulic pressure pushing the fork and thus the bearing onto the pressure plate. The more I study it the more I think it's probably like this on many others and the design (or mating of parts bin raiding) was not entirely satisfactory. Time will tell if it holds up I guess.

I'm with TC, my car's stock clutch was running 341ft.lb up until recently and is now coping with well over 400ft.lb on track.

IIRC mine was actually just £400 including fitting etc, then an extra £30 for the re-enforced release arm. This was a year ago or so though and I know the company in question have put their prices up since! I went for the Helix unit because at the time there was a 3-4 month wait on the TVR AP clutch. Very happy with it though!
