The last laugh?
Discussion
I recently finally got round to fitting an old Wizards of Nos kit to my Chim 450.
Experimenting at first at York drag strip we had the controller wired wrong and ended up using a pushbutton switch dangling by the steering wheel.
I fitted 120 jets in both the gas and fuel and the top speed was a little higher but the power was 'on and off'.
I only had a 50 jet so risked it and swapped the fuel jet for this.
Next run knocked 0.7 secs off and i bagged a 12.6 @ 111.
By the end of the day reducing tyre presuures i got 12.2 @ 113.
I realise that according to Wizards a 120 nos jet equates to 60 bhp and maybe even 75 bhp.
Ive now wired the controller correctly which is now triggered by a WOT (wide open throttle) microswitch.
Im also fitting another pair of solenoids and a 2nd injector for a 2 stage system. The second stage will be used in higher gears via the pushbutton.
I intend to increase the jets in Stage 1 for 100 bhp and have 60 bhp in stage 2.
I will swap the NGK plugs for cooler grade 8's and retard the ignition by at least 4 degrees.
Im hoping for a mid 11 sec 1/4 at over 120mph.
Question is...
Is this pushing too much and does anybody have any final words of advice, warning or encouragement?
Come see me at York this Sunday.
It will either be impressive or catastrophic.

If it goes bang then its a great excuse to build that low comp, nirtous cam engine, or even to get a corvette engine in there...hmmm 10 sec Chim?????
Sorry not at Oulton, get to York Sun or Mon, always a good day out if only to watch.

Doesn't sound like too much to me ... and when are you coming to Santa Pod so I can come and watch?
Is cross country mind. Santa Pod would take me about 6 hours. Maybe next year.
Stratfords not too bad so i may visit there too.
An eventful day was had to say the least.
A good nights kip on the airbed in the tent despite pouring with rain all night.
I signed into T class (Super touring car – over 1800cc with turbo and/or nitrous), my number was T403.
As you can see below 20 cars entered this class and i came in second to a 5.7 ltr Holden.

If my plans had come together i reckon i could have won.
The track was still wet at 10am when the 1st cars discovered just how tricky it was to get any real power down.
The right track had a 0-60mph camera set up instead of measuring 60ft. In the tables under ’60 Foot’ the times around the 2 second mark are to 60ft in the left lane and the times 4-5 secs are to 60 mph in the right lane... i have to admit being quite impressed with my best 0-60 of 4.0063 on my best run of the day with a 12.397 @ 112.27.

I started the day with 60 bhp jets in the nitrous and using a progressive controller to feed the power in over a couple of seconds. I had also swapped the rear tyres for the Toyo R888’s and checked the pressure at 10psi.
The 1st 2 runs had me struggling for grip as the track was still damp.
On the 3rd run it was better and i ran a 12.9 so back to the pits to swap the jets to give 100bhp.
The 4th run got me down to 12.5 @ 112. The 5th was similar and i now wanted more.
Back to the pits... fitted another pair of solenoids, another injector into the inlet elbow and i now had a 2 stage nitrous set up with 100bhp on the progressive controller at full throttle and 60bhp activated by push button which i was going to use in 3rd and 4th gears.
I turned on the bottle, did a couple of checks and all seemed ok.
Got back in the queue for the track and waited. Class t started moving forward so i turned the key to start the car and the engine redlined by itself for a second then calmed.
I later discovered the 2nd nitrous solenoid was leaking nitrous into the inlet!
I tried running anyway but the car didn’t perform and ran a 14.
We removed the 2nd stage then discovered the bottle was now empty on the next run therefore killing the power by injecting too much fuel in.
Swapped the bottle for a full replacement and had my best run of the day with 12.3 @112.
I followed this up with a 12.5 before the next ‘incident’.
As i approached the track for my next run i heard a pop and the sound of about £20 worth of gas leaking under my bonnet.
The nylon nitrous pipe had got too hot above the exhaust manifold and exploded.
Obviously the next run of 13.6 @ 102 was without the aid of nitrous.
Id managed to turn the bottle off to save some gas and after repairing the pipe my next run was side by side with the winner in class... i got off the line 1st but the big Holden came passed me at the 1/8th and beat me by just over a cars length.
The last run of the day.... forgot to turn the bottle on!!!.... i was tired by this time so called it a day.
I was going to stay for Monday, but hardly had any gas left so packed up and got home by 9pm.
It was a long day but yet another part of the learning curve ahead of entering both the ’Hot Rod Challenge’ and ‘Pro ET’ on Sept 21st.
