Hi all,

A little over a week ago my passenger side window was smashed.

Finding a replacement piece of glass for this is proving impossible. I have spoken with all the suppliers and there appears to be no glass available in the country.

I am now reduced to calling around scrapyards to see if there are any broken down tvr's with glass still intact. This doesnt seem hopeful.

Just looking for any further help or advice that anyone might have. Cant believe my Tuscan might be permanently ko'd because of a window...

Thanks in advance.

David Gerald had a load of glass made. Have you tried them?

If not we own Auto Windscreens and a large glass factory.......

Could the other side not be used a ‘mirrored’ template?

If expensive, perhaps do a group buy, as after reading this I’m sure several Tuscan owners may want to buy a couple to store in the garage for this eventuality?

Also, the firm that does it would possible become THE place to get glass from which may ease the financial pain of being the prototype customer.

Not as straight forward as that the set up costs are very high

Well it looks like getting some glass manufactured is going to be the only solution in the short term (by that I mean in the next few years). Either that or wait for someone to write off their tuscan whilst being careful not to damage the side glass. smile

If anyone has any suggestions of where to start then please feel free to voice them. Cost is obviously going to be the main factor here so if anyone has any ballpark figures then that would be helpful too. My primary concern is getting the car back on the road and I have fully accepted that it is probably going to cost more than just a quick £100 for a window replacement.

Also if any other Tuscan owners are in need of glass or are just wanting to cover themselves for any future eventualities then let me know. More heads are better than one.

Cheers.

This might sound a bit stupid, but what do your insurers say?
You have accidentaly broken your glass, you need them to pay for a replacement - less your excess, what can they do to help?

Currently have searches in with

breakeryard.com
247spares.co.uk
1stchoice.co.uk

1st choice did bring back a hit but when company went to look for the piece they thought they had, they found it had already been sold...

Any other ones people can think of?

When my drivers side window got smashed (about a year ago), it was a long hunt. One was eventually found at Peninsula. Apparently side windows don't break (as opposed to windscreens) so nobody's interested in putting together an order of sufficient size to get them made. Worrying.

err, yes, doesn't the insurance just charge you £50 which doesn't affect your NCD - so it's their problem isn't it?

Technically this is true, but the insurance company only really wants to deal with the main glass repair companies like autoglass, autowindscreens etc.

These two were the first people I spoke to. They will only fit new glass (not used glass) and since there is no new glass in the country they were basically like "well we'll just have to wait".

Id rather not wait months or years until someone makes some new glass, so basically Im on my own if I want to get this fixed.

My 2001 Tuscan was a total loss in the recent fire at TVR Power, if you watch this video at 1 minute 5 seconds you can see the inside of my Tuscan, the passenger window is in tact, although is looks burnt, this could be cleaned up.

Give Dom a call at TVR power, not sure if he would let you take it off, not sure if the car is still there, it may have already been moved to a breakers yard.

Worth a punt if you’re struggling to find one

Thankyou so much for the offer.

Ive been reading all about the fire and to be honest I feel so gutted about what happened. Kinda makes my problems seem pretty insignificant.

I did speak to both Andy and then Ray at TVR Power last week. They mentioned that they had a Tuscan with intact passenger side window glass, and said that I could have the glass.

But when I phoned back on Tuesday Ray said he had been told by his boss (Dom presumably) that he couldnt give me the glass because of something to do with the insurance company.

I had assumed that perhaps an insurance inspection was still pending and the cars would need to be as intact as possible for that. What he wouldnt say though was what was going to be happening to the cars and whether or not I could get the glass at a later date. He did seem pretty stressed at the time which id say is fairly understandable.

I know its perhaps a lot to ask but if u get a chance could you maybe ask them what will be happening to your car when they are done with it? I would happily take the glass and pay a reasonable price for it.

The reason that TVR Power cannot remove/sell the glass to you is because it is not their property to sell.

If the insurers have declared it a total loss ("write off") then the car belongs to the insurers and no one else.

The insurers will then sell the car on to a breaker/scrap yard. They are not going to deal with the general public.

The insurers will not be storing the car and letting the general public come to their offices and buy parts from it. It will be up to you to deal with the breaker directly.

It will be almost impossible to have the glass manufactured. Most of the plants have orders for batches of thousands from the major motor manufacturers. Are they really going to interrupt/delay that production for just a few side windows?

You will therefore need to order a reasonable batch and spend a few thousand pounds. They will want cash up front or at least on delivery. Who is going to underwrite that cost and then store the glass until it is sold? How often is side glass required? Not often I think is the answer. Who is going to put down the outlay that will take years to recover?
