There is some truth in this.......................it's all about creating hydrogen which when mixed with petrol makes a much more efficient burn. A mate of mine rubs a Renault 5 and gets huge mpg out of it, and it's a lot cleaner.

Apparently this is not new, the idea has been around for donkeys years, it's only recently, with petrol prices soaring that people have been looking at it again.

Derek is quite correct this has been around for years, we use it on gas turbines for emissions reduction and it increases power by increasing the mass of the fuel charge, so you effectively get a greater amount of fuel used for the same specific throttle opening. It is much the same as you may notice on a cold wet morning, the cold helps to increase the density of the fuel charge, the colder the fuel the more dense it becomes, therefore you get more fuel into the cylinder and when detonated gives more power to the engine. The water combined with the fuel also helps as, under pressure and then being detonated as part of the fuel mix, the resultant steam expands in volume, more significantly than a purely fuel laden mix, it also releases additionl oxygen to increase the combustability of the mix.
It has just never been adopted by the major manufacturers and with catalytic converters in most exhausts the emissions are more controlled.
So not balony at all just not in general use!

Hope this meagre explanation helps!

Now wait for Johno to correct me hehe

I believe the phrase is combusted or burnt, detonated doesn't quite sound right.

Over to that Johno blokesmile

Haven't the university of Sheffield recently created a car that runs on pure hydrogen? It delivers the same power as petrol but is effectively free, as you make the hydrogen at home from water. Sounds like a plan to me!

Given that water vapour is a major greenhouse gas, it won't be long before they work out they can tax cars running on hydrogen......

If one ignores the sun - quite easy to do this summer - no energy is free. I think someone made it a law. To get hydrogen out of water all you need is lots of energy.

I sometimes wonder about energy. Isn't there only so much available and it's just being recycled in different ways or is that to simplistic?

.. yes, that sounds right - even wind turbines take energy out of the air, which must then be replaced (by the sun).

That's exactly right. Ultimately all we're doing is moving energy around, we aren't creating or destroying it.

I believe its designed to use off peak electricity to do the conversion.

Hang on, I think I see the drawback.

Petrol has a classic smell. Remember movie tributes like "I love the smell of napalm in the morning"

Well napalm is a petroleum based jelly and smells accordingly.

If this stuff works we could make bombs out of a water-based jelly.

Can you imagine Robert Duvall in an army uniform and a cowboy hat saying.

"I love the smell of KY Jelly in the morning"

yikes

Except the entropy of the universe is always increasing, so as a thermodynamic law, some movement of energy is "effectivly" a destruction, as we'll never get it back without expending even more energy in the process.

My guess would be that they are taking a charge from the generating system and electrolysing the water to produce Hydrogen and Oxygen, the former of which is used to blend with the petrol you can all try this at home with a car batter and a couple of straightened out wire coat hangers as electrodes. This would be precisely the reverse of a Hydrogen fuel cell where Hydrogen and Oxygen are combined to create water (H2O) and electricity. Wonder how big the water tank that you tow around behind you will have to be?
