I was using loads of oil and the diag. was rings so opted for an engine gutting. Once apart found on of the pistons missing a two inch chunk off the edge and it looks like it has been there a while.

Big question is how did the chunk exit? There is no evidence of it bashing about in the engine, no head damage and nothing in the cat's.

Make sure it's not inside the inlet manifold waiting to do some damage at a later date. I've seen that before on an RV8!

I reckon one of the dogs ate it

It could possibly have been the reason for the oil consumption - seepage on the inside of the rings.
