have had 2 new tyres yesterday can anyone recomend a product to remove sticky stuff from old weights

White spirt.

[x 7usc]

methylated spirits will do the trick and wont harm the paint

Petrol works too, but wash off after all sticky stuff removed.

Neat washing up liquid applied and left to soak in will do the job allied with a bit of elbow grease. Less aggressive if you're concerned about the finish on the wheels.
