Does anything else out there think that the DVLA is taking the p*ss when pretty much any number plate from 05 and earlier with the letters 'TVR' is £980 !!!

TU05CAN is £3520 but TU06CAN is £245 !! I can't remember how many 06 Tuscans were made but we must be talking near single digits !

Some may or may not want to spend their hard-earned £££ on a plate, but I thought it might be fun to have something with 'TVR' on it, especially when everyone in France comes running up to me to ask me what my car is...

So, I logged onto the DVLA site and saw how much they were asking..

I mean its not like we get fleeced every which way by the Govt or anything (!), but yet again, we are having the Michael extracted.

FYI - By comparison - If you fancy a private plate in the USA, provided it has not already been taken in your state and is not obviously offensive - You can put ANYTHING on it for $65 !.

IMHO, I think it is massively wrong in principle that the Government should be allowed to make a mint out of us. If a private individual wants to pay for a plate from another owner, then that's fine, but for the Government to try and charge nearly a grand for any plate with the words 'TVR' on it is daylight robbery...

Sorry, but it is Monday, its been pouring all weekend and I felt like havign a rant smile

You should try their swear filter. I bought the wife a new Mini last March. The Reg she wanted started Po08.

They wouldn’t issue it because Poo is a rude word and somebody might be offended.

Hmm.

Charging for cherished plates is very sensible. They ain't essential, but a true luxury item.

You know my wife then. hehe

My wife is a HUGE Winnie the Pooh fan. A couple of strategically (if illegally) placed screws and PO 08 SUE would have read POOH SUE.

I phoned up and tried to reason with them. Despite the operator accepting that Winnie the Pooh isn’t the world’s most offensive character, she just couldn’t over-ride the computer.

Now all the similar numbers would have cost me £999. But the government obviously didn’t need the revenue.

But then, I suppose if Labour Lords think they can get £100K for changing the law to suit, what’s my paltry grand.

You need a bit of lateral thought to get a bargain.

I have H15 VBX or HIS V8 X depending on if its on the road or show plate.

I also have L77 ANB or L7 IANB

I know I'm sad, and I don't care wink

Would have to agree with the OP. For the same letter/number and my initials is £245, with TVR its over double. Well penalise me because I'd rather my cars initials than mine wink

nothing to do with the fact that more people want a TVR plate then an STH plate !! Business is business unfortunately, you pays your price you takes your choice. stop your moaning !!

I guess their thinking is that TU05CAN is more like TUSCAN than TU06CAN. TU55CAN hasn't even gone to auction yet, I expressed an interest 3 years ago.!!!!

NewReg think that TU51CAN is worth £5,995.00 yikes and TU05CAN is worth £2,990.00 (down from £3,520.00)

Just bought a 06 Tuscan convertible, and, thanks to this excellent thread, contacted DVLA and bought TU06 CAN for £245. By the way the problem with the 05 number is that DVLA will not allow a transfer if the vehicle was first registered before 1st March 2006.

That's interesting I thought that 05 would have been 'issued' March to August '05 so any car in that period and newer would be eligible?

TVR plates are really not worth the money or the bother. Dealers hate them because the owners usually want to see their money back or transfer the plate, and the dealers end up having to make new plates. Prospective buyers may not be interested and then haggle the price down by saying they don't want the plate, don't want to pay for a plate they don't want and then the dealer has to foot the bill for getting rid of the plate or risk losing a sale.
To some extent the same is true of a private sale - the TVR plate doesn't add any real value to the car.

IMO better just to get a personalised plate that you can take with you whatever car you own.
