Ok, so the time has nearly come for me to put my money where my mouth is and buy my first TVR. (All previous discussions about 'what to buy' now ignored.... it has to be a TVR!)

Now it would seem logical to suggest that second hand prices fluctuate throughout the year, with the winter months providing the best buyers market. Am I right?

I anticipate starting my 'search' in the New Year, when I have finished renovating my house. However, I do not want to miss out on the best selection of keenly priced Tivs. It would certainly seem that my £15k (ish) budget will buy me a lot more car at this time of year.

What I need to know is when do prices (and demand)start to pick up again?

It is also true that some people will wait until the Spring to sell their cars, which i would. I think also that most will still hold out for the best price whatever the season, and desperate sellers will always be there.

I think your better off setting yourself a model, spec, and price and just wait until the right car comes along.

Hi Peter

Unless you are prepared to travel all over the country, I expect you will end up buying at whatever time the right car becomes available. So don't wait for the "right time" just keep looking for the right car.

Have fun!

Sound opinions. Prices may be lower when there's snow on the ground, but there won't be the choice as most people wait until spring to sell - to get a better price/quicker sale.

Prices are always very variable - not only depending on condition and colour scheme but also how keen the owner is to sell it. For each seller who has 5 cars and doesn't care much whether it sells this month or next, there'll be one who's got in a financial pickle and needs £15K now rather than £17K in a few months time. So just keep your eyes open and pounce when the right one floats past. And anyway, would you buy one in a colour you didn't really like just because it was a bit cheaper? I wouldn't!

Happy hunting!

Top Man!

VX220 was never the way to go........

Agree that you will buy the most car for your money the week before Christmas but it will be not your first choice of colour/trim/engine/model. I got mine from Peninsula and it happened to be a case of right engine/colour/model and the owner 'had' to sell it - I just got lucky.

Decide what you want, Griff or Chim, engine, etc and keep looking. Speak to Peninsula - they have contacts and may be able to find what you want.

Just play the waiting game,it's deifnately a buyers market. I have just picked my new chim up one week ago and spent 8 months watching prices. Seems people will accept quite a bit less than the advertised price in some cases. Hold on and good luck.

Buyers are thin on the ground this time of year - I've just sold mine for a 'good' price after maybe putting it on the market at a bit too much and not getting ANY enquiries at all.

Two months it was on and not a sniff - the odd tyre kicker but that was all. Dropped the price quite a bit and it went within 48 hours ...

Looking at it realistically, we both got a good deal- the buyer got an excellent Chim in the colour he wanted, and I got what the market dictated which is all you can expect really. there were over 130 Chims for sale just on here. I didn't HAVE to sell it either so it wasn't a giveaway.

Sure I'd have liked a bit more for it but I'm saving a lot by buying the Chim's replacement direct.

As someone has said, keep looking all the time, on here, adverts, Top Marques, other sites, Sprint etc, and when you see the one you want, colour, history, mileage etc, move fast!

The TVR has become far less seasonal than it used to be , but around 40% of TVR's aren't touched between October and mid January that I deal with.

The `fair weather drivers' buy to go on holiday with to enjoy the summertime, going to events like Spa and Lemans 24 in their cars and then sticking them on chargers for the rest of the year.

From now right up until the first wage packet after Christmas is the better time to find one at a more realistic price and strangley enough I just wrote this very same item on our web New's section today.

They may only fluctate by £1000-£1500 but as big dealers get stocked up then buying power is everything at this time of year..there are bargains to be had for those who can spend the time to find the right cars.

FWIW IMHO the right time to buy is when you've found the right car

Thanks for you thoughts chaps. I would ideally like to be looking now, but seriously don't need any more distractions from finishing the house.... (threats from the good lady if the kitchen doesn't get done soon!)... and lets face it, a new TVR is a major distraction!
