As some you will be aware from my previous postings (V8S or S3) I’ve just picked up a Chimaera spec V8S. It’s 94 L reg and the VIN plate year ident is ‘R’ (even though the ‘Bible’ doubts that any were made in 94) this indicates to me it was made in 94, when the factory were throwing Chimaera bits (engine, wheels, steering wheel, ice sensor into the last of the V8S's.
The engine bay VIN plate gives the engine serial No as XXXXX HC, and somebody has gone to the trouble of fitting the 400HC on the Plenum. I know this can be a ruse for Chimaera’s and Griffs for premium prices, but V8S’s?? (no premiums to be had here).

What I want to know is where on the block is the actual serial number stamped? I’ve been told that it’s on top of the Vee above the bell housing, but I’d be buggered if I can see through all the plumbing/wiring.
Any ideas as to when production of the 400HC first started?
Bar removing the Cam to check profiles is there any external way of identifying the engine?
Personally I think it’s a straight Chimaera spec’d 400 V8 as it doesn’t seem any faster or peaky than other V8S’s, although it does seem to come on cam at 3000rpm and is lumpy at sub 2000rpm in traffic (OK I’ll get it serviced then!!!)
Any ideas welcome, I’ve asked the Factory for details and am awaiting a response but I am not holding my breath.

the engine No on my griff 500 is stamped on the block just under the N/S exhaust manifold, however you may need a torch and a cloth to wipe off the muck to get agood look at it.

Many thanks budd found it under No 3 spark plug, It ties up very nicely..
Spoke to TVR Engineering who confirm that it left the factory as HC spec'd V8S!!!!!!
Also spoke to TVR Power who clicked the serial No into their gizmo and also confirmed it to be HC, although he did say that HC may not always be added to the block serial No. (it is on mine though)
Just to make things more interesting the guy reffered to the HC spec as "Speed 8 spec'd" , must add that to the speed 8 thread in a mo.
Off to the S threads now to get any other late V8S's to check theirs, because at the moment I think it is one of a kind. (well when it left the factory anyway)
