Mike, time for a new courtesy car! How about this - Mercedes wanted me to agree to a 5000Euro excess (about £3000?) on their 'courtesy' A-class diesel, if I used their insurance. Ended up paying my insurers £15 for temporary full cover then another £12 when Mercedes messed up (Step 1 - get customer to leave car, step 2 - take car to bits, step 3 - order parts known to be needed 2 months previously...oh bugger). Idiots.
Toyota just throw you the keys to a fully insured Yaris, without any questions/credit card deposits/limb removals. And fix it in the time they estimated, to the nearest minute not the nearest week.

some of these have been 'modified' by Abbots. I took a wheezing old 9000 and the bugger went like a rocket. Another one had suspension upgrades and made mine feel like a waterbed. On the other hand I've had old 900s that were bloody frightening

Yes, I had one of the modified ones recently for the first time. My wife has a bog standard one and when I drove the Offords car at first I thought that my wife's must have a problem until Simon informed me that it had been chipped and rode on modified suspension. I think they've now done away with the 900 courtesy cars. They were frightening as you say but going pretty well for cars with close to 190K on the clock!

How normal is it to be charged to use a courtesy car supplied by the garage whilst they service my car? Doesn't seem that courteous to me.
To summarise, not that normal. What's really irritating is when you are not told that you are being charged for the hire car. Myself and at least one other person were caught out by this from an otherwise well respected and recommended north london specialist.

My Chim was in for Waxoyl and a new hood at Peninsula and I got an elderly Primera Diesel - complete with broken door mirror and missing wheeltrims. Did me fine though. I don't want to pay for a stonking new motor as a courtesy car - either directly or through the service price.
