Spotting a loud car 'Ritual'- do you do it? :)

Hi All

Just to see if I'm the only one that does this- when you spot an interesting (normally loud) car, especially a TVR, do you automatically turn the stereo down or off and drop the window down as well? While trying to stick an ear out to listen as it goes past??

Only found out I do it completely automatically the other day, as the Mrs pointed it out when I spotted a Griff. As soon as it had gone past, I had no recollection of putting the car into 'listen only' mode!

I also do this, not only for the sound but the smell as the burnt petrol and heat pours into your nostrels, probably not the healthiest but

I sometimes see a potentially lovely car coming, get prepared to see every bit and hear every piston but it turns out to be rather quiet...

Every car had a distinct sound. Viva, Triumph 2000, Cortina, Rover 3500, GT6, Stag, Beetle. Even the old Allegro sounded different.

I also do it whilst in town/walking somewhere, hear the exhaust note approaching and usually stop walking to see

Sunday night i was in the garden, just thinking how quiet it was when some thug in a stupidly loud car went past at full throttle then finished off by popping and banging for about half a mile down the road. I instantly knew who it was too by the distinct TVR popping, which was confirmed by him giggling like a little girl when i rang him 30 seconds later.....

Absolutely - I used to be able to tell my Mum which cars were going past without being able to see out of the garden! MGB's, minis, Dads Renault 5 Gordini, rally bloke from round the corners Mk1 Escort Twin Cam. She was amased that I could detect a Talbot Solara from 500yds just by cupping my ear!

Ah I had a similar experience when I was in college, a friend and I had gone into town for lunch, a purple 4.5 Cerbie went past and I just told him to 'be quiet for a second' in as not as many words, been known ever since as the 'Engine Hoar'. Still, I can think of worse titles!

Yup, I get that Cheshire cat grin when I hear something that sounds loud and meaty, I always want to jump up and down like a 4 year old at the sheer joy of engine and exhaust noises. I remember hearing my Dad's Stag from the end of the estate when he came home from work, always made me smile

In the US at the moment. Windows are permanently down listening to all the V8's.

Yup.

I have a similar one of winding down the window and occasionally dropping a gear before I get to a tunnel Only noticed I did it when the missus asked why I was putting the windows down when it was pissing with rain
