My insurance with Mannings is about to expire and out of curiosity I got an online insurance quote from Tescos which at £514 - £531 (depending on volountary excess chosen works out about £200 cheaper than my current insurance from Mannings. And you get a guaranteed temporary replacement car with the Tescos insurance.

Has anyone out there had to exercise their insurance policy obtained from Tesco's and if so what was the service like?

a regular customer of mine had a Golf GTI from us around 3 months ago. he insured it with Tesco and drove off with a big smile on his face having saved a substantial amount compared to other quotes he had received.

the following weekend he left the car overnight in Bham City as he'd had one too many and on returning the next day found an empty space where his pride and joy once was. I think this was on the Saturday morning, by Monday PM it was found in South Bham in a bad state.

As far as I understand Tesco had settled in full within a week of writing the car off.

if i was the claims investigator id have been slightly suspicous of the time scale between insuring it and then it being stolen, but they seemed to cough up no truoble.

good luck

Mr & Mrs Flipflopgriff are with them. I'm sure they've posted before on this subject.

Thanks for that idea. I just tried it and it came out £50 more expensive with Direct Line and apparently without the hire car offer. Me thinks this is all about branding?

Had one claim with them while I owned a MG. Lady run into the OS rear on the way from my Wedding to my honeymoon (great timing).
Dropped the car to my Dad's and notified Tescos.
Came back from Honeymoon, job done. Collected, repaired and delivered without any fuss.
Only took 2 months to get the claim sorted in my favour and my excess back!!

quite right. You will generally find that for performance cars (and it would appear young(ish) drivers) that Tesco and Privilege are the "arms" of Direct Line that are cheaper premiums.

In fact, it is all one big group owned IIRC by Bank of Scotland to include D/L, Churchill, Privilege, Tesco etc etc.

id take a guess that Tesco "buy" in a policy from DL and add a small fee as theyre not really in the business of making huge amounts from Insurance. Direct Line however are so they most probably add a larger profit margin.

Like you said its all about brand awareness and I think thats what Tesco is gunning for right now.

Yes - we're with Tesco - they were better than DirectLine at the time - but things are fairly fluid in the insurance game...!

Haven't had to make a claim with them (don't want to tempt fate, especially as Mr FFG has just pranged his company car!! ). I guess the proof of the pudding is when you really need to make a claim, but Tesco are a lot cheaper on the premiums...

Cheers
Mrs FFG

Correct. Direct Line do the motor, home, travel, pet etc policy and claims admin on behalf of Tesco. Privilege is actually part of the Direct Line group.

search the archives on here - I've had plenty of 'experience' with them in the past and now swear by mannings rather than To$co....
