Right, I'm in!!! Thanks everyone. 
My only problem now is I can't figure out how to get to the friggin' battery as my trickle charger doesn't have an adapter to plug in to the cigarette lighter (does anyone know if you can buy something to convert the normal battery clips to a cigarette lighter connection?)
I believe it is in the on-side footwell but I can't see an obvious access panel and don't want to rip all the carpet out looking for something that isn't there. I'm not supposed to go in through the wheel arch am I?

You should be able to pop the clips direct onto the battery terminals. It's a bit of a squeeze I know, but I can fit jump leads on, and they're normally bigger than charger leads.
So, take the footwell panel off, on the passenger side the carpet should have a hole in it that you can pop your finger in and pull the whole lot out. You won't rip the carpet as it's a solid section there.
Then move all those cables and ECU out of the way - I usually just drag them forward, then dive in head first equipped with a torch and the charger leads, they should go on.

Wheel arch, NO!
It's in the passenger foot well. YES you do have to take the carpets out. the one on the foot well floor and the upright one at the front. I will be there along with a jumble of wires and replays.
Not sure about the ciggie lighter thingy.
Good news: Once I knew where to look I found the battery compartment easily and was able to attach the trickle charger clamps as suggested - thanks Big_Al and dannyboyo.
Bad news: Nothing happened when I turned the trickle charger on.
I have checked the power point and the extension lead and they are fine. The problem is that my trickle charger only has two lights - one for charging and one for maintaining, it doesn't actually have a power on light as such. Therefore, I can't be certain if the charging light isn't coming on because the battery is brown bread and beyond reviving or because the trickle charger itself is dead. I guess the only way to check it is to ask to try and charge a neighbours car!
