In a nutshell they want to reduce speed limits on all rural roads ( to a limit set by the local authority) force introduction of roadside speed control ( over the limit tut tut, we'll soon stop that) and basically make car driving as miserable and tedious as possible

I can't see that it will make any difference at all. The Police won't get anymore funding for additional speed guns and there won't be any more BiB so all they will do is reprogramme existing GATSOs to 50. All you need to do is slow down until you have passed it, just as you do now.
I don't stick to the speed limit when it's 60 so there is no chance of me sticking to it when it's 50!

A little bit of Wellsian thinking..... so we've got sat navs, yeah? And those sat navs allow us to pretty accurately check our speeds. Therefore, the technology that would allow that to work the other way round, ie for the sats to track us, is there ready to be used. All it needs is the appearance of those newly complusorily-fitted-when-new or required-to-pass-MoT vehicle transmitters/Trackers to come along and hey presto - we are all speed-monitored from space - no need for GATSOs nor any other device, no slowing down, passing the camera and speeding up again, no quick 'spank' 'cos it would all be recorded for posterity and all in the interests of public safety!

...um not quite: the sat nav in your car is a receiver not a transmitter, it picks up the transmissions from the satellites (at least 3) and triangulates them to work out your position. By working out the change in position over time it can work out your speed. For the satellites to be acting as receivers would be a huge step and would require a lot of energy to generate the carrier signal (so not from your 12V aux supply in the car) and very accurate positioning to point the transmission at the satellite (think of a 2 or 3m dish on the roof of your car being constantly adjusted to point to the 'nearest' satellite). Also, the amount of processing power and/or satellites required to keep tabs on you in this way is prohibitive.The current thinking would be that your driving 'habits' would be tracked via GPS and captured by a device in your car, then stored ready for download (e.g. by the BiB or during your MOT) or transmitted to local waystations by the side of the road.
Either way, we're screwed!
All 9-5 weekday vehicle use should be confined to genuine motorists 'on business' .
All the rest can use public transport.
It's the extra legless wives with their legless kids, and wandering pensioners who've jammed up the roads and cause most of the traffic problems for those seriously trying to get somewhere.
All agricultural vehicles should be banned from anything but B and C roads.
If they make the limits any lower I'll just stop driving, catch the bus, and then retire to a country where the citizens aren't smothered by all this police state bulls

so, I wrote to my MP, and did receive a reply, from the minister for transport - Jim Fitzpatrick.
He said, and I quote.
"The department for transport keeps all speed limits under review. However, no decisions have been taken about the reduction of any speed limits. Any proposal to change the national speed limit would have to be based on robust evidence of the impact on casualties, emissions and journey times. It would also need to consider issues of enfiorcement and public acceptability. Any changes would be subject to widespread consultation.
In 2007 there were 2,946 deaths on our roads, with 1,973 of those being on rural roads. The proportion of fatal collisions on rural roads where speed was recorded as a contriburory factor was 30%. Given the extent of the casualty problem on these roads, it is clearly vital that the department looks at ways of reducing these casualties. We are doing this in developing our new road safety strategy, which will be the subject of public consultation in due course.
The department recognises that speed is not the only road safety issue, that is why speed mamagement polict is just one part of a much wider road safety strategy. Our current road safety strategy 'Tomorrows roads: safer for everyone' focusses on a range of issues including driver training and education. I would urge you all... if you care about our ability to enjoy our roads, contact your MP, sign what ever petition you can... speak now, otherwise this will just happen, and I dont think anyone wants that.

The death rate on the roads has considerably reduced over the years, especially considering the enormous increase in vehicle registrations and use over the past 30 years.
So, it's the rural roads is it ?
Well, what is needed IMO then, is increased visibility near junctions, bends ,etc, and the total banning of agricultural vehicles from busy routes.
So-called 'ribbon development' is rampant now, meaning that small groups of new houses, industrial estates, etc are littered along the edges of major THROUGH routes...junctions everywhere then pink bloody road markings and pedestrian islands, double white lines, a forest of signs, the appearance of 40mph limit 10 miles from the nearest town !
What a damned mess, and an accident waiting to happen simply because of the DISTRACTION to drivers, frustration and impatience and increased use of potentially dangerous junctions.
Government....SORT IT...with INTELLIGENT planning and not the brainless doodling of chimps who take the train to their ivory towers.
There are a lot of road users who are simply trying to go about their business safely and at a reasonable pace.
Mr. MP do some PROPER research into how most accidents are caused, and by whom, instead of the usual non-commital mealy-mouthed politically-correct blather that is used simply to cover your own corrupt arse.

Deaths ( not including any injury) from MRSA every year ( on average over last 10 years) 3700, which is easier to sort and control?
Wash hands and replace work surfaces with copper or introduce huge swingeing laws to restrict freedom and enjoyment?
