Hi, Meeting a mate of a mate later, ex-pat like me in France. He has a 96 Griff, and wants to have it swapped over to French docs. I've done all this before with my Lotus, so know the process, control technique, other docs etc.

Question is for CofC doc, and situation of TVR. I had to pay to get mine from Lotus, but I got it. How can he get a Certificate of conformity for his TVR Griff? Anyone know?

Easy answer is: you can't!!!
The only way is to get the manufacturer making you one. Since there is nobody left in Blackpool to answer this type of request you won't be able to follow that route.

Another possibility is to get the car identified by the local DRIRE. For that, the car has to have a European Conformity Number starting with e11*
I know the Chimaeras had such a number from 97 on. Have a look at the manufacturer's plate under the hood. It should be indicated just above the VIN.

The last possibility is the single type approval, which is tedious, cost a lot and the result isn't guarantied at all!!!!

Best for your mate would be to get in touch with the guys from the French TVR Club and seek advices there.

Good luck.

Just forget about importing TVR's into France. In theory it should be possible for the Griff and Chim but it is a nightmare and it could still be denied. For later TVR's it's even worse.

Yes the C of C is an impossibility Im afraid - we looked into it when I sold my Griff to a French chap last November.

In the end the chap bought it and

- Set up a UK company to use as a postal address
- Got UK insurance and tax (and a pretty good private plate from the DVLA smile )
- Will need to come back to Blighty to get an MOT

He did this as a stop gap for 12-18 months whilst he sorted out getting the car registered over there

Cheers

Am told that if you contact the remaining few people at TVR Motors (see the TVR website) and ask nicely they may be willing to sort something out and get you a CoC. I tried contacting them and they never called back.

Am going to try registering in France as my car as an e11* number. It's a bit hit and miss. In the meantime, am on UK plates (I have an address in the UK as am from there originally) but with French insurance (third party only).

I'd frankly be happy to stick with UK plates in France if I could get fully comp insurance in the UK that covers me there. Anyone know a UK insurer who will insure a non-UK resident (a reputable one, not one of those dodgy registered in Gibraltar ones...)

Thanks

There's no one there at all at the moment, they've all been laid off, pending 'ongoing negotiations'. (Don't hold your breath frown)

The best thing to do is talk to your local DIRIE and they will tell you from the start. I've spoken to a few guys on the French TVR forum and if the Griff is a post 99 car then it has the e11 prefix. Pre 99 cars don't apparently and that’s where the problem occurs. I've done loads of cars from Jap imported EVO's to STI's with no problems, it can be done within a matter of four weeks.

The question your mate should be asking is will he sell on the car? If yes then get it on French plates, if not then leave it on UK plates and enjoy. I've lived in France for over six years and I still have a few cars with UK plates on them. They are insured at my French address (French insurer), I have a control technique (French mot, just changed the lights) without any problems whatsoever. I've been stopped by the police loads of times and never had any problems.

If you need the name of an insurance company just let me know and I'll forward on their details.

Woow thanks to everyone. Seems like a real challenge for the CofC. I'll copy this all over and send to my mate of a mate, then he can decide, but seems complicated. He's got a UK address too, so probably best the car stays on UK plates. Shame about TVR, remember a few years back they raced during the 24hrs. There were loads of blokes here with there cars for that event. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=565ardcEOvU

Hi, Yeah mate of a mate isn't for selling the car. Just wants to be able to bring it over to France and enjoy the nice roads in La Sarthé. He's got classic insurrance, but won't get cover for more than 30days outside of the UK. So your last bit about possible insurrance cover seems the answer. Please pass on the details, that would be great. Cheers !!

I read the story about the re-birth of TVR, and £99,600 price tag. Ho ho !! Anyway on further reading of the new TVR site, I saw since September the Russky is offering Certificate of Conformity's for £250 a go. Is this to get enough money together to make the first re-birth TVR? Anyway just wondered if anyone has bought one, for which model, and most importantly did they get their TVR registerred in France with their TVR CofC?
