Lack of use!

Hi guys

I finally got my first TVR in February this year and when I first got her I was thrilled and couldnt wait to get up in
the morning and open the garage just to look at her, unfortunately with this current rubbish weather I'm really not getting to enjoy her as much. so much so that I am even beginning to think if I should sell her and get something I can use more often.

Am I just suffering from the seasonal sunshine disorder thing or does anyone else feel like I do?

I question your suggestion that you can't use it ? I've used mine everyday this week and indeed had the roof off on several occassions.

As I mentioned elsewhere they can get wet without suffering or melting and they aren't undriveable in the wet, ignore the stories, yes you need to take more care with the loud pedal but isn't being able to actually 'drive' without the aid of loads of electronics what it's all about?

I understand its driveable and Its not a case of being careful with the loud pedal or water issues, thankfully my car doesnt leak, drip or let any water in not even when its being jet washed! I guess for me the enjoyment and the reason I bought the car was to have fun during the summer, having the roof off and generally having a blast. Unfortunately I havent been able to for a while now

My Tuscan has a slight leak on the roof over the passenger side and for love or money come rain or shine I drive it just for the hell of it. I can understand what you are saying about wanting good weather for the roof off experience but I personally love just having the TVR for a blast. I drive mine come rain or shine (and it is my second car) just for the theatre. Maybe I am a bit too much of a petrolhead but thats me.

Mine sits for weeks not being used, then everytime I do go to use it something breaks. My old Triumph Spitfire that used to sit for weeks on end never used to have as many problems.

I tend not to use mine in the rain at the moment as it is a hassle to keep putting the roof up and down for a 10 minute drive to work. I've also got to sort out corrosion on the chassis rail, so don't want to get it damp and as a result accelerating the rust. I am also a little peed off at the moment as there is a petrol smell coming from it, I think it is from the filler, but the only suggestion I have had it to drill a hole in the cap, which I am not too confident in doing, as I want to cure the underlying problem, rather than venting it by drilling holes.

My road tax is due in the next few days and looking at the weather forecast for August am wondering whether it is worth re-taxing it or laying it up until next year.

Yes, you should you probably sell your car to someone who will drive it. Cars are for driving, if you want something to use in the sunshine try a deck chair.

Yeah.....sell it to some one who will use it. Its a crying shame that its sat there doing nothing. Thats is the reason why we just sold our Tamora. Although the main reason we sold it was because we now race a TVR and the weekends are now filled with even more fun! I still have the Tuscan though for occasional road madness!!!!!!

Oh and TVR's don't disintegrate in the rain, contrary to popular belief

WHS. I usually use my Tuscan over winter..and the bike in summer.

I admit to being a fair weather driver. As I intend to keep my TVR for many years there is no pressure to use it as an everyday car. That's not what I bought it for. So I limit the mileage to 6000 miles a year. I'm normally out in the TVR every weekend and the odd Friday to work. So it does get used frequently. I don't enjoy driving in the rain though - simple as that.

+1. I don't like driving the Tuscan in the wet, it's just too much of a handful and not what I bought it for. I used to drive the Chimaera come rain or shine, in the dry there's nothing like the Tuscan though. I'm intending to keep mine for many years so enjoy the sunny days and drive the daily hack when it's miserable!
Keep it and change your mind set! :

use it in the sun, rain or a cloudy day, they are great cars and should be enjoyed all year round (avoid snow though) just lern to respect the loud pedal and even in winter the roof can come off

+2. I have had mine 7 years now. It is mainly a fair weather car, apart from when I have got caught out in the rain. Touch wood, nothing has majorly broken on my car. I have had a battery and taken the starter motor off to recondition.
So I just enjoy it when its sunny, gives me something to look forward to.

I don't think this has anything to do with use or lack of use. Its your car, use it don't use it - its up to you.

The weather is rubbish and having a car for the weekend is about driving it when you feel like it - not when it stops raining for five minutes. I have had my griff for 3 years and with the growl coming up at the weekend i am wondering if its going to rain for the third year in a row.....

These cars are made for those perfect moments - blasting up a welsh mountain road with the glorious V8 bouncing of the rockface with the wind blowing through your hair. I don't remember any of my perfect moments including a torrential summer downpour the minute you take the bleedin roof of.

To change or not to change is a continual torment for me as well. Too many fabulous cars that i want to own which of course includes pretty much all other TVR's. Trouble is i'm not sure i can bring myself to sell it......

I keep resisting the urge to buy a runaround plus my new GF lives 20 miles away so putting a few more miles on the Chim rain or shine!

Use it as you're comforable using it - but one thing I've got to say is familiarity (with any one car) can breed contempt.

I had an Integrale Evo as a regular driver some years ago and I soon got fed up with it. Great car of course but using it on a daily basis meant it lost its edge, the build quality issues niggled, and mostly it started to seem underpowered. It wasn't of course, it was just I got used to it. Then there were the overheads from the extra miles I was doing in it. Now most of my driving is in something that puts out 60bhp, which means every time I get into the Cerb it feels like the first time and still has the desireability.

Two totally different cars of course but the principle is the same. I certainly wouldn't want to use the Cerb every day, irrespective of the weather. Okay it's not a soft top so I don't have the leak worries but a few 'moments' in the dry have reinforced my thinking that I'm best limiting its use when the weather's not so good. 6k in 16 months may make some on here wince but my wallet and the chassis are grateful if nothing else and I've no regrets.

I want to keep it for as long as I can and for the first time ever I'm not checking the classifieds dreaming of my next car. Mind you, I'm not sure if you're thinking along the same lines if you are pondering selling up in July. What will your thinking be in November/February when the roads are coated in ice or salt and each trip is more of an 'experience'?

Yes :-). Though after a great ride back from having a couple of new front tyres fitted and hearing a little lad say to his dad "look TVR" when waiting at the lights, it has rebooted the enthusiasm.

Well I decided to spend the day cleaning and polishing the car yesterday after which I took her out for a nice drive although I didnt have the roof down it was just what was needed and lo and behold its nice and sunny today and I have a nice shiny Chim waiting for me to take her out! Maybe someone up there is listening to me, more sunshine please for all TVR owners!

TVRs can be used in the wet. I always take the Tuscan out during the weekend regardless of weather.
