You here a lot on forums and gossip regarding good and bad production years for TVRS,chassis' not so good on certain years etc.

What is the general opinion, the early years, mid or the final batches??

Since TVR were constantly tweaking things I would say as late as possible for whatever model. Only exception would be the very last cars finished before the 'end' - the chassis will probably have been made earlier anyway. So I think 2004/2005 would be the best all round.

96 / early 97 seems good period from the Chims I have seen of that era (grey not white finish).
My 02 Cerb seems to be rock solid.
But it is a lottery IMHO although 98 seems to be the worst year.
Dont know about 04/05 era but maybe it is a little early to tell.

Late M series and early Tasmins were good finishes that have stood the test of time. Sadly I don't think the last batch of cars (since TVR started their own coating) will last long without real attention/care.

I would agree, 98/99 seem pretty bad, my 93 car had a much bettter chassis than my 99

I suspect it's not as simple as which year of production. Probably more important was who worked on the car, and whether they were in a rush for lunch. On factory visits I remember seeing unpainted chassis piled up outside in the rain and I couldn't help thinking this accounted for the variable durability of the plastic coating. So probably the best cars are the ones where the chassis was finished *just* before the batch was sent off for coating.

have to laugh when I read this bks,

funny though I was told 98/99 cars were the best of 90s production and cars built before 97 were not so good.

So who do you want to believe, personally I think it's all bullst.

I have a 98 Griff 70k miles owned for 10 years used everyday for 7/8 years never had a problem with it, had chassis checked last week and it was in excellent condition.

IMHO the best cars are the newer ones with the last production of Blackpool built car being the best(Sags/T2).

Hi Mark hope you are OK - glad to hear the Griff is going well. As you know I think they are excellent cars, I still have a soft spot for them. If i had a triple garage I think there would be a Griff in there too !

I love TVRs, but unfortunately they are all full of horror stories... I have a 2001 Chim and look at the "crushed" chassis members to avoid the steering column...but at least they do it both sides..... I also have a 2006 Tucsan 2 Vert.. so far I've discovered Griff sidelights (in the inner wings after they dropped out), butchered wiring loom with spades to fit them.... took off the indicator stalks to find they've been nibbled with a pair of pinchers... Unfortunately there was an attitude of if the customer couldn't SEE something it doesn't matter.. Don't take your TVR to bits 'cos it's a case of "where ignorance is bliss".

Its interesting looking at all the comments, speaking to the guys who worked in the factory from the early days, they say there was more time to do the builds and therefore the quality was good, where as the later cars were all bonus fed and the sooner you got them done the more money you was granted and sod the quality.

Approx figures of 65 cars out of the factory every week would ensure a decent bonus at the end of the week near the end of TVR production.

As suggested in earlier comments, i have heard that the 98,99 chassis were made of poor material all be it there is always a good few that make it for one reason or another.

That's what I've heard/read, too - must say I was pleasantly surprised with the way my early (April '93 build) Chimaera was put together when woing work on it.

Been doing some sanding back on the rear corner outriggers this afternoon. Just working around the car doing local area sanding back and painting at the moment as I estimate it is taking about half a day on each corner.
