Get yer head off

how easy is it to remove the ally head covers - mine are quite oxidised and I'd like to take them off and clean them up. Do I need new gaskets ? where do I get them from ? how much dismantling of other engine bits is required ?

I would have thought it's just a case of unbolting them (8 bolts at a guess per head), and cleaning as necessary.... It's advisable to fit new gaskets when ever you take anything apart on an engine, as it might not seal properly when you refit....

All the above is just general, as I don't have a Chim....

Someone else is bound to reply who has actually done it though !

Have you tried using a damp brillo pad with the covers on the car?

I've used this method a few times with good results all over the engine bay.

After using the brillo just give everything a quick wipe over with some teflon type lube on a rag for a lasting shine.

Rocker covers are held on with 4 screws each.
You'll probably need to unplug all the HT leads to shift them out of the way, and the nearside cover IIRC won't come off with the plenum chamber fitted - you need to take that off first. Once you do, you'll need to clean old sealant off the plenum mating faces and apply new sealant. It's also a good plan to fit new rocker cover gaskets: the original design were cork but for a coule of quid more you can get the later rubber type.
There are a couple of places that do polished/ lacquered and/ or coloured rocker covers as well, if you're that way inclined...
