the cam in my 4 litre engine has done 117k and there's plenty more 100k plus tvrs out there too on original cams. my engine was still on its original clutch at 117k aswell.

By contrast my '99 500 @ 45K:

Again fully serviced, well looked after etc etc. Guess maybe it is the quality of the part that went in to it at the factory.

^^ that premature (in mileage terms) failure is surely down to no oil on the cam at start-up, always a killer. If it's only done 7k miles it's been stood for a very long time between start-ups and also likely run at low engine speeds (cams run at half engine speed also so their working condiotions are even worse) . Only a cam sitting in an oil bath or one pre-lubed before start-up would survive those conditions, and those conditions are hardly common smile

It happened at 6 months old Joolz so it had hardly been standing around and had been used enthusiastically rather than at low speeds. Car was run in correctly and was an NCK build.....but it's a long time ago now.

The sad thing is when it went back for a cam, the factory put 1000 miles on the car, crashed and badly repaired it, used it for carrying oily parts in the boot and items from inside the car went missing.....No apologies.

Still dont know why I still bought new cars after that!!

Now im waiting to see what V8D recommend as the replacement.
Im wondering how the Stealth would behave with 300bhp of nitrous scratchchin
But i also like the idea of fitting a solid lifter option with some adjustable pushrods to set things up properly.

I think i will be investing in a set of forged pistons and ARP bolts throughout although if i fit the ARP head studs then im worndering if i will have problems if i need to remove a head in the car. Guess its a problem that could easily be overcome by removing the mounts if i need to.

Another note, when i removed the cam last night the roller chain was VERY loose. I guess this has stretched considerably over the high mileage and nitrous abuse. I would imagine this would alter the cam timing somewhat.

Probably a blocked oilway on the initial build.

If it was one of those NCK performance engines it might have had a cam with rather aggressive properties? hehe Great whilst it lasted, who gives a toss if it was as lumpy as a bed of spuds biggrin
